Before i start, the games arent listed in order of which i like most, but more simply, which ones came to my head first.

1.Final Fantasy.

well not much to say about this game, seeing as though its probably one of the most amazing RPG's ever made. I'd say if you were going to play any game in this series, pick one of the better ones, Such as Final Fantasy 7, thats one of the best, and Final Fantasy 10 was next in line. Final Fantasy 8, and Final Fantasy 9 are good games, but i'd go with 7 or 10 if you want to play a truely amazing game. and if you're looking for better graphics, go with 10, 7 is 10 years old now, but an amazing game nonetheless.

A little about Final Fantasy 7:

It was released in August of 1997 for the Play Station, it was the first Final Fantasy of its kind, jumping from 16-bit 2D graphics to full 3D graphics. The Story takes place in a town or well..more like City of Midgar. There are power plants in Midgar which are powered by "Mako" which was being sucked from the earth. Mako is the power source for the planet, so these power plants were slowly killing the planet. The reisdents in midgar become aware of this and organize a retaliation on shinra and their power plants. The organization was to be named Avalanche. Avalanche attempts several times to break down shinra and their power plants. But of course, not everyones perfect, so some of these attempts ended in tragedies. Such as a Kidnapping, A Destruction of a whole sector of Midgar, and plenty more. Just when you think things couldnt get worse, more problems arise as Avalanche enters the Shinra building, causing Avalanche to flee from midgar and travel around the world to find other ways of dealing with the Mako problem, and of course to find a psychotic man who goes by the name of Sephiroth, who has a strange relationship with the main character- Cloud. The main characters run into several other people they encounter along the way who they ask to become part of the team. Alot of weird and unthinkable things happen in this game, making you constantly think about what could happen next. Theres even a really sad part in the game, that will make anyone with a heart want to cry (not really, it just sounded good). theres alot more to it then that, i just typed what came to mind at the time, but all in all, this is one of the most amazing games i've ever played.

now a little bit about Final Fantasy 10:

It first hit shelves in December of 2001.
it starts out in a hugggee city named Zanarkand (yeah, i know, not the prettiest name, then again neither is Midgar) Tidus- the main character- Is in the middle of a Blitzball game (bliztball is an amazing mini game, well its actually not so mini, its pretty intense, and an all around cool game you can sit and play for hours on end) when "Sin" attacks the City, leaving most of it in ruins. Sin then sends Tidus and a man named Auron a "couple" years into the future. He winds up on an island, where he meets a man named Wakka (pronounced kind of like the sound pac man makes ha) and a Summoner named Yuna (yes its a girl) Tidus joins Yuna as she makes her Pilgrimage, hoping to make some sense out of things. Eventually the teams goal is to defeat "sin" and save the world, it wouldnt be a final fantasy game if you werent saving the world, right? Final Fantasy 10 has some of the most amazing graphics available on the playstation 2, and was the first game in the series to use 3D interactive Backgrounds.

2.Star Ocean

Yet another amazing RPG, the first one was really good, and Star Ocean Til The End Of Time was even more amazing. its battle system is way different from that of a Final Fantasy game, and i actually really like it, although the Final Fantasy battle systems are cool as well.

Star Ocean Til The End Of Time (SOTET):

Fayt (the main character) and his childhood friend Sophia and the rest of his family are on a vacation in a place called Hyda. While strolling around the hotel and enjoying a few games in the battle simulator, an unknown force attacks Hyda. Forced to Evacuate, Sophia and Fayt rushed to find Fayt's parents. They were then again seperated from Fayt's parents due to an attack on the escape route they had taken. after being attacked numerous times they finally make their way to an escape pod, and then are seperated as the escape pods fall in different places. Fayt lands in Vanguard III, while fayt is seperated from his friend, and his family, he has to find a way to, well, find them. This is where he meets up with some characters who will help him out along the way in his search for his friend and his family, although of course, battles and side-missions come with this game, duh, its an RPG. and well im not to sure what else i can really tell you about this game, besides the fact that it is a really amazing game.

3. Wild Arms.

and Yet another truely amazing game, Wild Arms is definately a game worth playing. If you are going to play any of them though, i would recommend playing the second one, Wild Arms II was probably the best one out of the series.

About Wild Arms II Second Ignition:

Ashley- The main Character- (and yes, its a guy, sadly. poor thing) Is transformed into a demon-like thing in an experiment conducted by unknown people. Ashley is the experiments only surviver, making him special (YAY ASHLEY!) Ashley runs into an ex-war-hero who is now a criminal named Brad (thats a more suiting name for a guy). and a Magician by the name of Lilka, in a special force called ARM's (yeah, that is special). the ARM's "special" force is out to find the evil that gave ashley this odd demon like ability. as time goes on, the team finds a far greater conspiracy, which, of course, threatens the world as they know it. Ashley, Brad, and Lilka will run into more allies that will join their party, all with "special" abilities, seeing as though they are in a "special" force and all. Wild Arms was a really fun game to play, although i had to restart it about 3 times, becasue my little brother thought it was cool to constantly delete all the data off of my memory card, hey, what are little brothers for, right?

and last but not least

4. The Legend Of Dragoon

i have to say, if any game comes close to being one of my favorite games, besides the final fantasy series, its this one. Everything about this game was amazing, and not only was it a good game, but it was actually challenging, something not many games seem to offer these days, I actually had to re-play this game as well, but not due to the fact that my little brother likes to delete memory card data, but more towards the fact that i wasnt expecting the final boss to be as hard as he was. so then i had to restart, and put another countless amount of hours into the game, but this time, i was ready to kick some last-boss ***.

(im sure you're sick of reading these, and im actually getting sick of typing them as well, which is why its a good thing im on the last one)

A little about The Legend Of Dragoon:

It all started 10,0000 years ago, when the Divine Tree gave birth to all different life forms, of the life forms the 105th life forms were dragons. the 106th- humans, and the 107th- the Winglies. For a while, all was peacefull, until and uprising of the winglies sturred things up a bit. The humans then gained the power of the Dragons, and could then turn themselves into what they like to call "dragoons". The dragoons were humans with wings, and a scaley-dragon looking body, which you'd probably expect, and far more power than that of their human form. Along the way, the main characters run into some other characters who also have, or can aquire the power of the dragons. and um, i guess thats all there really is to say about the game, you'd really have to play it to understand how amazing the game really is.

So if you are interesting in experiencing what a really good RPG is, then pick yourself up a copy of any of the games listed above.

now, you're probably wondering why i just took all the time to type about these games instead of just putting down a link to a site that could tell you about it, probably in better detail than i can, and the truth is, well. i have no life.

I have played all of those except Wild Arms, I have heard of that before but I never played it. It seems interesting and maybe I'll rent it sometime.

yeah, you should definately look into it, it is an amazing game, but i would go for Wild Arms 2, because that one was probably the best one, in my opinion anyway.

For Final Fantasy, I would reccommend Final Fantasy Tactics over the other games in the series because I believe it has the best storyline of any game out there. Though, it is a bit different than the other games in the series.

Star Ocean is a great series as well. Tri-Ace are really good at what they do. A nice little thing about the Star Ocean series is that they are sci-fi RPGs, rather than the traditional medieval times RPG that all other RPGs seem to be. Til the End of the Time had more sci-fi aspects in it than did the first game, but they are both very good (I have not played the second game nor the game boy game, so I can't speak for those).

Speaking of sci-fi RPGs, there's a game that I believe should be added to any list of must-play RPGs. It is Phantasy Star IV. Don't bother with the earlier three games; they're crap. Phantasy Star IV, however, is simply a masterpiece. Great story, great battle system, interesting characters, and lots of replay value--it's especially interesting if one uses the walk through walls game genie code to play the entire game with only one character, who can be chosen using a simple save state hack.

Haven't played Wild Arms or Legend of Dragoon, but I do have a reccommendation of an RPG, despite the fact that I've never played it. Rogue Galaxy. It's also a bit of a sci-fi, RPG, I think. The battle system is somewhat similar to that of Star Ocean Til the End of Time, and it's about pirates. Pirates are cool.

i have to agree with pie, on some things anyway, i think Tactics is a really good game, but the gameplay is so much different from that of any of the newer Final Fantasy's, but the game itself is still amazing. If you want to experience how most of the Final Fantasy's gameplay, and battle systems work, Tactics probably wouldnt be the game of choice, But tactics is a really good game nonetheless. Phantasy Star IV wasnt added to my list because i dont recall ever playing that game, i probably saw the first ones, and decided it wasnt worth playing, but if you say its a good game, i guess i should check it out. and as for you not playing Wild Arms, or Legend of Dragoon, you should definately look into them, The storyline for Wild Arms Kind of lacks in the begining, but it makes up for it in the end, and Legend Of Dragoon is just an all around incredible game. So if you're looking for a new game to play, you should check them out, i'll have to check out Phantasy Star IV then.

I'm pretty sure I'm one of the few people who played and enjoyed Final Fantasy X-2. I liked it, I loved it, so sue me. Silly

I have played Star Ocean but haven't finished it yet. I should but I just love playing with my Xbox Live friends. Playing Star Ocean means single player. Amazing how quickly I've grown to love social gaming.

2 other must try RPG's would be BioWare's Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic which came out in 2003? It's available on both the original Xbox and PC. It has a great story with an excellent twist as well as memorable characters. KotOR II was pretty good but because of the way the story went, you didn't get the feeling that the characters you could add to your party were as memorable but they felt a bit more real with the addition of a system where if you went evil, they would too.

Also, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Perhaps the ultimate RPG throwing you into the game with complete control over how your character looks and what skills he/she has. There is a lengthy main quest but there are so many side quests to do. A friend and I have been playing on Xbox Live through voice chat while playing this game and have gone through each of the guilds. It's pretty fun playing like this. Help each other, yell at that damn rope you just hit with your foot causing that rock to come slamming into your face, heehaw. The NPC's in this game don't just stay in the same place either. They sleep, they eat, they move around. They actually feel alive. It's great!

Plenty of content packs you can get as well. New dungeons, quests, items, and with Shivering Isles, a land mass 1/3 the size of Cyrodiil and 30 hours more of RPG goodness.

Morrowind was also pretty cool but seemed rather empty as the NPC's didn't seem alive.

Hopefully when Mass Effect comes out it'll be yet another RPG you should try. The interactions between the character you play, your party members, and the characters in the game you'll encounter are amazing. It is definitely a step up from the type of interactions you had in BioWare's earlier RPG great, KotOR.

yeah, i actually didnt mind Final Fantasy X-2 either, people bash that game alot, and im not sure why, maybe it was because of the fact that the only characters in the game were 3 chicks, but i dont see why that would matter, it was still a good game regardless of if the characters were girls, guys, or well whatever else you could possibly be. I loved trying to get 100% in that game, seeing as though the com-sphere bull **** always threw me off. so i had to settle for a 98% or the 99.8% i had gotten the one time, that was entertaining. its nice how even if you follow the guide book, you can still get thrown off, which was always fun, constantly wondering if you got the % for the com-spheres, becasue i know i didnt! it took me about 4 game-plus' until i finally got the 100%, and by then, i had seen the final ending on the computer a couple hundred times, but there was still some satisfaction of acheiving the 100%. as for Elder Scrolls, i really didnt like that game, im not even sure why, it just didnt interest me in the least. my brother would play it non-stop, and i'd wonder why he would, maybe i just failed to see how good of a game it really was, but it wasnt a good game, if you ask me. and for BioWare's Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, i have played this game, and i did like it, star wars games always seem to be fun, for a certain amount of time anyway, of course they can be overplayed just like any other game.

Star Wars? Overplayed? Hahaha. I actually finished KotOR II in 4 days, 40 hours. Haha I silly.

Yup the 100% was hard to get in X-2 but I managed. I liked the gunner dress sphere but it wasn't as powerful as some of the others. I also like Yuna's overdrive very much; very beautiful.

The Elder Scrolls aren't your typical RPG game. In Morrowind you're basically set loose in a small town and have to figure out for yourself what to do. Yes, the game does tell you what to do but unlike games such as Final Fantasy, you're not given a linear storyline to follow. You also have the entire world to explore, again, unlike other RPG's where you are lead along. It definitely detracts from the essence of the storyline though.

Dont know about Final Fantasy Tactics, but Final Fantasy 7, 10, 10-2 and 12 are good. Never played 3, 4 or 5, so cant comment on them, but the Final fantasy Series in general is good

You'll also have had the pleasure of watching the worst movie tie-in in history. Seriously, not only was it a terrible movie, it went completely against everything that made FF7 a good game and actually harmed my esteem for the game. Advent Children was all about spectacle pretty visuals; FF7 was terrible as a game but fantastic for its story, setting, and characterization.

Anybody who makes a list of RPGs that nobody should miss out on and fails to include Fallout is clearly a communist who hates freedom.

I'm a really big fan of the FF series although for some reason unlike most people I've put FF8 on the top step, probably because I really loved the graphics, plus it was the first FF game I played. FF 7 is great too though and so is FF X, 9 is also a classic.

Star ocean...that's the second PS RPG I played in my whole life and since then I have beat the game again and again controlling different character in battles, creating different parties and solving different mini quests.

LOD is also a great game, unfortunately I never got to finish it, and I don't remember why. As for wild arms, even though I've played it I can't say it matches up to the other 3.
