twenty thousand dollars
of aluminum
crushed
like a stick of gum
in a kinetic jaw of asphalt.
red and blue
fills this black room
that we call a city.

and the lights, they dance
across the scene
to a silent techno beat.
and the shadows talk
though their mouths
aren't moving.
and the metal beings
march on by
in a salutory parade.
and shattered glass
promenades
until the scene begins to fade.

enter hospital,
where relatives crash and burn
like a wingless angel
or a saint who could only afford
enough gas to get to hell.
sobbing like a solemn thrush
singing for it lost the nest it loved
until that lovely vocal chord is crushed.
such a beautiful voice becomes noise.

you could draw the curtains
but it'd be futile
emergency rooms are dark holes.
you're condensed to something
less than you were:
it's making ghosts out of souls.
the television talks to itself
for all you can hear
is the ceasing of
the ekg beeping:
you've lost what you held dear.
