I currently use a free version of it (called Ad-Aware SE), and it wont load any new updates. Everytime I go to update, it says there is an error (but doesn't say what it is). Should I just uninstall, and re-install it?

Is anyone else having a problem with Ad-aware?

I've noticed a big slowdown recently with my computer, so I'm guessing Ad-aware isn't catching many things (either due to being outdated, or because it's the free edition).

Slow downs, especially on Windows, are caused by many factors: redundant registry clutter, too many background processes, unneeded services, conflicting software/drivers etc.

A simple adware/malware scan will not fix your computer problems, barely even partially. And Ad-Aware was brilliant from my experience with it when it came to catching items, at least compared to Spybot, CCleaner and others. CCleaner might be of interest as it does more than an adware/malware scan.

Errors during update? Can you clarify? A program update, definitions update...? And a reinstall never hurts.

It tells me my definitions are 40 days old. Then it asks if I would like to check for updates. So I hit ok, and then it shows it's retrieving an update, and seconds later it says "error retrieving update".

Is CCleaner free?

I would suggest reinstalling it. Also, if you use a proxy you could try entering the proxy settings, or making sure its not trying to use a proxy if there isn't one

Is CCleaner free?

Connection timeout, firewall blocking access, etc.? Anyway, as I said, a reinstall never hurts and won't take long. You can also manually get new definitions as a downloadable file.

CCleaner is freeware:

There can be many other possibilities as to why your Ad-aware don't load properly. Have you been installing other fake or rogue anti-spyware that put trojans in your system ? If you have should quickly uninstall them, some examples of fake anti-spyware are 1-2-3 Spyware Free, #1 Spyware Killer, AdwareDeluxe, AdwarePro etc, and the list goes on. Most of them have names pretty close to the original Ad-aware. You should be able to find the latest list of these rogue anti-spyware or malware at forums such as techsupportforum.com. Next, do an online scan using Panda Active Scan and install immediate protection Spyware blaster and IE-Spyad. You also perform a Windows update and run Hijackthis, and post your log to online help forums, such as techsupportforum.com. There will be experts there to help you find out if your system is infected with spyware, and recommend methods to get rid of them. Good Luck Smile

Ad-Aware is good, but the personal edition doesn't really do much.

If you want full protection, get AVG Free. Of course, it's free, and it updates automatically (regularly if you keep your computer on).

And AVG will automatically schedule a daily scan and while you keep your computer turned on, it will scan, and once it's finished, it will remove any threats found automatically.

I've had AVG free for a while now, but ad-aware has caught many things AVG hasn't. I don't think AVG protects against all spyware and so on, does it?

I haven't had any problems with it or with getting the updates so I would guess you probably have to reinstall it. It sounds like maybe that will be the key to fixing the problem. I wish you lots of luck with it.

Did you see any completion message regarding installation?

The first thing I do with a program that isnt working anymore is reinstall it. 98% of the time it fixes your problem.
