American Gladiators returns to network televison in January 2008. It will air on NBC on Saturdays.
From what I've read, Hulk Hogan and Laila Ali will be the hosts and commentary team. It seems alright, but I wouldn't have picked Laila. She doesn't seem to have much charisma in my view.
I loved this show growing up, and I sometimes catch the reruns on ESPN Classic. I doubt it will compare to the original, but hopefully it succeeds. I would rather watch something like this, rather than Survivor or American Idol. _________________ http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Main_Page

Agreed with you on watching this over Survivor and the likes. I can't wait to see how it does. I grew up on the *** end of it, and it's always stuck with me. I just can't wait to see how it preforms. _________________

The revealed the Gladiators this past week during Deal or No Deal. In my view, the names are a bit corny (perhaps I'm just too big of fan of the original series to enjoy them). The 6 male gladiators are: Justice, Mayhem, Militia, Titan, Toa and Wolf. The 6 females are: Crush, Fury, Hellga, Siren, Stealth and Venom. Siren is the only name that was used on the original series.
From the looks of the previews: eliminator (the last event), joust, the wall and hang tough from the original show are returning. Anyone know of what other events will be on the show? I'm hoping for assault and atlasphere.
Six episodes have been taped so far, and more might come if it does well. Also, apparently at the tapings of the show: signs were taken away, and replaced with Hulk Hogan signs by the producers. What the hell? Why hype up the host, when it should be about the gladiators? People should be watching the competition, not watching to hear and see Hogan host. _________________ http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Main_Page

| I remember when I was really young and that was on. It was a pretty interesting show back then and hopefully the new version of it will live up to what the other one was. I do have to agree with you that I would much rather watch something like that instead of all the other kind of reality television out there. I am not a big fan of the whole reality television explosion, so this seems like it would be a nice change considering. While I am not necessarily a Hulk Hogan fan from his wrestling fame, he would probably do well in the part as he does tend to have a lot of personality when it comes to running things on a show. I would imagine he is eager to get into working with it since it would be an opportunity for him to redefine his career as well after his various stints in wrestling and his Hogan Knows Best show that is over now I believe. It should be interesting to see how it goes. Hopefully this new version will live up to what the old one was. You never know though. |

Anyone want to remind us what American Gladiators is all about. I barely ever watched the original series. Wasn't it something like contestants go on the show and try to do challenges like obstacle courses and stuff while the gladiators try to stop them? _________________

I remember watching Gladiators as a young boy, it was amazing. I once went to watch it live and its amazing seeing all the games being set up. Obviously on television it goes for advertisement breaks when they are doing this but when you are watching live you get to see it and its quite mad. Just like football the view is different but the atmosphere is amazing, i just wish i could have got a few autographs.
A friend of mine has a picture of himself and Cobra from when he was about 7 or 8, not autographed though _________________ Your request for hosting with Lifelesspeople.com has been denied.

It's a competition. 2 men facing each other, and 2 women facing each other. They try to earn the most points in several events, then whoever wins the eliminator at the end is the champion. Whoever has the most points before the eliminator event gets a headstart. I'm assuming they are keeping that part of the show for this new version.
More news on the show: there will be events that involve water and fire. From the previews I've seen: only water has been shown. If a person gets knocked off in joust, they go in the water. Also, another returning event will be powerball. They've also confirmed new events, but havent said what they are. _________________ http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Main_Page

Ooh, I can't wait to see the Fire Joust. When they get knocked off they fall into fire! _________________

The show premiered last night. I thought it was decent for the most part, however I saw some problems with it.
The commentator: I don't know who he was, but he was a bit bland. I don't see why Hogan and Ali couldn't have done commentary during the show. They did interviews with the contestants and hyped up events.
Assault isn't that great compared to the original. Now the person has to load the weapon which takes longer. One minute total certainly isn't enough. Each person was out at the "sand pit" because they couldn't find the arrow in it. I found this stupid, and hopefully they change it.
There is two new events: earthquake, and hit+run. In earthquake, the contestant and gladiator are on a platform that is rised above the ground a little. To win, the person had to knock the gladiator off. In hit and run: the contestant had to run back and forth avoiding big medicine balls. These were alright, but I think they could've done better.
The end event: the eliminator was changed around a little, but had some things from the original series. However, unlike the original series, there is no penalty for falling off the hand bike. Also, no gladiators are in it (the original series had gladiators at some parts of it).
As for the fire and water elements: they aren't a big deal overall. In hang tough: if you get knocked off you go in the water. The same goes for joust, and hit+run. In the eliminator they had to swim under a platform with fire on it. I think that's the only fire part of the whole show.
I will watch the show again, but I will probably mute it because of the bad commentator.
The show is on again tonight, apparently Monday is going to be the regular night for it. _________________ http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Main_Page

I tried watching it last night and honestly, I turned it off after 15 minutes. Part of it could have been because I was already tired, but the show was just plain boring.
They put too much into the video production value (I mean, do we really need slow-mo intro scenes for skill competitions?). There was too much emphasis in "humanizing" the contenders (the pre-show interviews are so much like any run of the mill reality show interview). And really, there was so little action compared to all the time they spent prodding around doing nothing.
I has terribly disappointed. |

The old American Gladiators show had less talking, and I think in an hour they got through a few more events if I remember right. Generally events are short, which means they should get through a lot in an hour. Perhaps they will do less talking in the next episodes are taped. As of now, only part of this season is taped.
Ratings for the show have been decent so far, so I'm guessing more episodes will indeed be taped. _________________ http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Main_Page

The show has done well enough in the ratings, that a second season will take place. I believe the finale is only a few weeks away. I remember hearing it was going to an hour and half, but I can't remember the exact date. _________________ http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Main_Page
