For all AVG free and paid users, AVG 8.0 is released.
You should have received a popup about the new version. I got it today.
Support for AVG 7.5 will end on May 31.
There were many complains about the popup, but I don't see the reason behind it. The same thing happened for 7.5 when they were ending support for AVG 7.1.
Some online users complained that AVG is no longer free. This is not true. It will always be available through free.grisoft.com. _________________

That's funny that you brought this up because when that new 8.0 thing keeps popping up I keep thinking that 8.0 is the paid version (since I tried it previously for 30 days). So I went and checked the main website and I'm not sure what you are talking about since everywhere I looked on their site the 8.0 costs money, and the areas where you can download the package, it's only a 30 day free trial. Explain yourself :p. _________________ The Gamer's Journal | Online Portfolio | Half-Life Library |

Haha... I've been closing (and ignoring) that popup for weeks now. It's a weird popup, which isn't actually a Windows Vista window (as such), but looks like it, and the buttons act like it. I guess that's so it doesn't appear on the task bar thingo.
Meanwhile, I should get around to installing it. May 31 doesn't give us a lot of time to change, does it? |

Updates for AVG 7.5 has been extended till December 31. Check that out at their AVG Free forum.
And there's no need to download AVG Anti-Spyware anymore. It's included in both the free and paid versions.
AVG Anti-Rootkit, however, is not included in the free version, and won't be available as a standalone. Anyway that won't make much difference, since it really does nothing. I have it installed, and I don't have it running.

Go to free.grisoft.com and you will see that it's free.
If you download AVG Anti-Virus 8.0, it will be a trial version.
If you download AVG Anti-Virus Free 8.0, you can use it without limits. It's a scaled-down version, available for home users. And no, you won't get popups asking you to buy it. _________________

Thanks for the link. I guess I just couldn't find the link for the "free" version on the site. So what exactly is the difference then between the paid version and the free version? _________________ The Gamer's Journal | Online Portfolio | Half-Life Library |

That's kind of sad the free version doesn't have anti-spam, safe surf, safe downloads, or safe Instant messaging. All those features are actually included in the freeware version of "Avast!"; however it does have a one-up on Avast! with offering Anti-Spyware, and having recently switched over from Avast! to AVG, AVG detected almost hundreds of things Avast! didn't. _________________ The Gamer's Journal | Online Portfolio | Half-Life Library |

It's ok. I like the logo I'm not really happy with the Link Scanner though. It kills Firefox whenever I load a page with lots of links (like Digg). I've disabled it, but now I've got a red exclamation mark in my taskbar |

Other than anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-rootkits, the others are just plain rubbish. They do nothing other than to take up memory resources.
I have anti-virus only all along when I had AVG 7.5, and I don't see my system going crazy.
The best thing from 7.5 to 8.0 is that the free version has anti-spyware tied to the anti-virus now, making it an all-in-one security kit.
The worst thing is that it includes all the rubbish that hogs your memory. The LinkScanner is also plain rubbish. All these years without LinkScanner I am doing fine with just anti-virus. _________________

You can solve that by deinstalling AVG, and doing a custom reinstall (you can disable modules)
I have to say I'm also not amused with this new way to protect me. It actually distracts me while doing a google search. _________________ My new site

I just tried that. Apparently you can't disable the link scanner - only the Email Scanner and the Plugin for Microsoft Office Looks like I'll just have to deal with the angry icon in the taskbar |

I used to use Avast and recommend it to Windows users if you are interested (if AVG is becoming problematic). I prefer it over AVG and it is easy to pause/resume or disable/enable individual parts such as mail scanning, web scanning, etc. |

Sorry, I hadn't tried it myself yet, but I though I remembered I saw it as an option to deactivate while installing AGV.
However, I just found a way to disable it while Googling:
| Quote: |
If you wish to install AVG 8.0 Free Edition without the LinkScanner component, or uninstall this component from your program, please proceed as follows:
* Download the AVG 8.0 Free Edition installation package from our website.
* Run the installation with the parameters /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch. One way to achieve this is to:
o save the AVG Free installation file directly to disk C:\
o open menu Start -> Run
o type
c:\avg_free_stf_*.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch
|
Works perfectly. I now disabled it on my windows laptop. So this time, I'm sure it works _________________ My new site
