Does anyone know of a really good PNG compression program?

I always use Transparent PNG's in my layouts now because they look alot better, and PNG plus CSS layers work awesome together (complex layouts), but the problem with the PNG compression stuff in Photoshop cs3 is that it doesn't compress the files very well and the png sizes can be large. Even the lower settings in cs3 don't do good of a job and it makes the png's look like crap.

There must be some good tool for doing this. I know years ago when JPEG was the king they had good programs that would compress them, but the quality would be good.

I hope there is something similar for png now Smile

thanks.

Irfanview with the PNGOUT plugin.
You can get Irfanview here. The PNGOUT plugin is contained within this plugin package for Irfanview (auto install).

A demonstration of PNGOUT in Irfanview:

I agree with you Scar: Photoshop CS3 Extended is very good working with PNG pictures but It sometimes create large files. If I don't need transparency, I usually save the file as JPEG and set quality in 8 - 10 aprox.

I like and often use PNG but I hate the fact that Internet Explorer 6 don't support transparency and Flickr was messing the image when generating thumbnails some weeks ago (I don't know if this bug is still there) Evil or Very Mad

You have the main problem that a lot of people have while editing or creating images. As you say, also other image formats (as .jpge) used to be really big and if we talk about your bandwith we don't want that, so...

Some time ago I used a batch processing called "PngCrush" that is relatively easy to use and the result is... just good.

Then, I change to PNGOUT. The result is a really small file, but I think the quality is just good... maybe a bit poor.

Now, I'm using a really easy to use plugin and I think it could help you as a Photoshop user. It's name? "SuperPNG" and using it at it's lowest setting wil give you the same file as PngCrush. Also, SuperPNG is easier than PngCrush and the quality is more or less the same.

I recomend you the last (SuperPNG pluggin for PhotoShop).

Ignore the name. It supports way more than just png images.

If you want, there's a portable version.

I doubt that you care but I use the portable version.

That tool seems nice. Let's see if I have some PNGs to test it on. Smile

I use PNGCrush which is fast. And its free.

http://pmt.sourceforge.net/pngcrush/

Quote:
pngcrush is an open source, free command line computer program that reduces the size of PNG files. The compression is lossless, meaning that the resulting image will have the same quality as the source image. The main purpose of pngcrush is to reduce the size of the PNG IDAT datastream by trying various compression levels. However, pngcrush can also be used for various manipulations of PNG images, such as changing the bit depth.
There is an optional "-brute" option, which performs a brute force crush when set: rather than use one of a few common methods to crush the file, it will try all of them.
