Best war movie of all times

What do you think is the best war movie of all time? From Ancient age to Medieval age, from Gunpowder age to World War I, from World War II to Modern war...or Navy, Air and Land battles... the list goes on but I prefer movie that have some historical values.... Any suggestions for other war movie fans?

I personally prefer The Patriot(2000) , Saving Private Ryan(1998), and I also like the battles scene in Lord of the Ring...(if it can be count as war movie...)

Not-so recommended War movie DVD

Apocalypse now(1979)-Some people say this movie is classic...but I really don't know this movie is talking about? especially right at the end of the movie. Hope someone can tell me what is good about Apocalypse now?

Troy(2004)- the fighting scene is not bad, but this movie ends too abruptly and looks a little weird.....everyone dies? The dialogue sounds too a little too poetic, it is the kind you only want to watch once.. .

Master and Commander:Far side of the world(2002)- A movie with spectacular effect, but the slow pacing put people to sleep...Pirate of the Caribbean is better...make me a bit regret buying it...

The Great Raid(2005)-short and simple, not much action

Alexander(2005)-Too long...and too much talk... and I think I don't need to explain it...

Flags of our father (2006)- a little like Saving Private Ryan...it is a bit boring...and too boring for me...

Hart's war(2002)- The cover attracts me ...and watch the trailer which is quite good...so I bought it, however after I watch it...I realised that this is not a action-pack type of movie...more like law and order...

Windtalker(2002)- A imitation of Saving Private Ryan...watch it if you very free....

Honorable Non-War movie Battle scenes

Pirate of the Caribbean:The Curse of the Black Pearl(2003)-I like the naval battle scene when Jack Sparrow turn and fight captain Babossa

Pirate of the Caribbean:At World End(2007)-Again the I have never see a such a great naval battle before...although starting of this movie is quite messy...

Starwars Episode 1:The Phantom of the Menace(1999)-The robot GC is very nicely done...no violence..good and funny....

Starwars Episode 2:The Attack of the Clone(2002)-The Mighty Clone army and advanced weapon steal the show....make me wonder why Darth Vader later switch to use stormtroopers?

Independent days(1996)- The ending air fight scene is one of the best air battle I ever saw...very good....

Chronicle of Narnia:The Witch, the Lion and the Wardrode(2005)-Look out for the final fight scene...not as magnificent as LOTR, but you can see many mythical creatures fighting...quite interesting...

The Gladiator(2000)-The opening scene, although this is a not a war movie...the first 15 minutes is awesome....Highly recommended for the people who like Roman war style of fighting...and this the best Roman style battle scene I ever see....

300 - very good film, the monsters ruined it though. I thought Jar Head was quite good too.

War movies, ugh!

I probably never even watched any one such movie from beginning to end. If there's something I hate to watch, it is war movies and political movies (well, and the news too). I much prefer fiction and fantasy.

I know it's on the limit between war and a drama, but I'd say Lord of War. The one with Jack Nicholson as an ukranian Weapon Dealer...
I think I've seen it 10 times and now I'm wanting to watch it again while I'm writing this.
I like everything of it, the cast, the plot, the voice introducing Yuri... oh, and how can we forget the quotes, like:

"There are over 550 million firearms in worldwide circulation. That's one firearm for every twelve people on the planet. The only question is: How do we arm the other 11? "

This one made me laugh a lot:
Yuri Orlov: [to a pilot, who doubts that he can ditch the plane] You are the ****, you are the ****! "

Well martinz, you gave us a long list of really nice films, i can't think of another movie to add.

If i have to choose only one, my favourite is without doubt "Braveheart", Mel Gibson shouting "Freeedomm" gives me the chills whenever i watch it. That movie summarises everything that i like to see in a film, it's incredible.

Other one that i would choose are "The last samurai" (i re-watched it recently) and "The Patriot" (again Mel Gibson!!), both of them, managing beautifully scenes of action and drama.

I enjoyed "Lord of War" too, but i wouldn't put it with the best movies though.

Saving Private Ryan - for the breakthrough in realism it is certainly one of my favorite war films, well mm..it depends what you class as a war film I guess. For example, Schindler's List is about events in World War 2 although it isn't a typical 'war' film.i wouldn't say it's the BEST war movie ever..but . it's very realistic.. Or Apocalypse Now which is a film about a search into the darkest part of the human soul, not really a war movie in the classic sense... it takes place during the war, but I never thought of it as a war movie. In fact, I'd say an anti-war film, much the same way the Deer Hunter was. War was just the environment the film was set in but not centered on. It didn't overshadow the deeper meaning of the film or the characters journies which had little to do with the war itself. The men in Apocalypse Now aren't at the front, fighting it out with Charlie, they have a greater objective which leads them outside of the was film cliche.
I also like this movies:
300 - AWASOME movie
Platoon - The cast is perfect, script, everything. I have seen this film countless times.
Glory - an even better Civil War movie than Gettysburg.
All Quiet on the Western Front
Paths of Glory
Patton
Das Boot - German movie about a Nazi U-boat crew, shows you how war will work on your nerves
Cross of Iron - starring James Coburn. It's first rate, though the blood spurts are a tad 70's.

As far as war movies goes, Saving Private Ryan was probably the first really good movie I've seen.

"The Deer Hunter" was really good too, it won a lot of awards.

300 is the best modern-day war movie I think, that movie was just beautiful to watch. I don't think they could have made it any better.

I liked Troy too, but mostly only because of the ending that seemed fairly tragic. The movie itself was kind of boring sometimes.

Overall, I'd say SPR wins it.

i really like black hawk down, saving private ryan and the rambo films

Oh and there is another i cant remember what its called but i bought it in a box set that has black hawk down and saving private ryan in.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on Enemy at the Gates - whenever people talk about Saving Private Ryan (which is an absolutely fantastic film), there's always somebody ready to chirp in with "Well there's also Enemy at the Gates which is similar and also really good!" It's not. The only similarity is in the way it's shot. Saving Private Ryan was a movie about the ambiguous morals and intense day-to-day struggles of the real soldier in world war two; Enemy at the Gates was a movie about Russian soldiers that was entirely in English, starred talent with British accents, and revolved around a duel between two "heroes" and had a sappy love story shoe-horned in. I suppose it's a good movie if you're the sort of person that liked Saving Private Ryan for the action scenes, but if that's the case you're better off sticking with your blockbuster action movies.

I love war movies, especially those that are about Vietnam.

My favourite one (and the best of the genre, I think) is Platoon (Oliver Stone, 1986). A great, clear and impartial view of Vietnam is showed on this film... just amazing, from the music to the cast but it´s amazing for its duality: it´s an amazing movie and also a documentary.

I also love Full Metal Jacket (Stanley Kubrick, 1987). This movie shows not only Vietnam War faces, but the duality of human being and everything with a great Kubrick taste on it.

Without being Vietnam War films, I loved Spartacus, Kingdom of Heaven, Paths of Glory, Braveheart, Seven Samurais and King Arthur.

And one comment: I don´t think that Apocalypse Now can be consider a war film... it´s an adventure film, located on Vietnam War escenario... but it´s mainly an adventure film.
