I found this article about two people with the same name who both have blogs, and their "battle" for the highest google ranking, and I thought it was very interesting.
I suppose it's not original or anything, but it is a fantastic way to improve traffic to BOTH their sites.
Basically, Andrew Wright the comedian started talking about "Andrew Wright The Contemporary Artist" - which is clever because if he did this enough, and got enough hits, then anyone searching for the Andrew Wright who is actually an artist, they will get the comedian instead.
I also would not be surprised if these dudes actually spoke to each other before hand and discussed doing this specifically to increase traffic to each other. Very clever.

Blog war is hell. Or maybe it's just funny as hell. Here's how one of the oddest online kerfuffles played out:
In this corner, Andrew Wright, Brooklyn-based comedian. And in this corner, Andrew Wright, contemporary artist in Ontario, Canada.
Here's the situation: When Andrew Wright the comedian Googled his name, he was shocked to discover that the top result was not he, but Andrew Wright the artist. And for Andrew Wright the comedian, that would not do.
''I'm back in the blogging game,'' he announced on his blog, ThisIsAndrewWright.com. His goal: ``Knocking Andrew Wright, contemporary artist from Canada, off of his high and mighty Google perch . . . Oh, how I bet Andrew Wright, contemporary artist from Canada, just sits back and gloats over his vaunted search-engine ranking.''
And so on, and so on, repeating the phase ''contemporary artist from Canada'' (along with other, racier phrases the likes of which are typically frowned on in professional settings) in an effort to peel Internet traffic away from Andrew Wright the artist.
The artist responded on a new blog, called NoThisIsAndrewWright.com: ``It really is quite sad. Andrew Wright . . . has actually tried to adopt my identity . . . I am left to conclude that he is quite mediocre.''
Shot back the comedian: ``This interweb thingy ain't big enough for the both of us.''
Then he accused Andrew Wright the artist of provoking the entire battle.
The artist pressed on, describing the fight as being not just about ''championing good art versus mediocre comedy,'' but also nothing less than truth, justice and the Canadian way. ''He's not even funny!'' the artist proclaimed.
The comedian then beckoned ''foot soldiers of the revolution,'' to his Web-traffic cause, requesting that they click on his link, and not others, ``especially ones owned by a certain other Andrew Wright, contemporary artist from Canada, who shall remain nameless . . .
``I will be the most Googled Andrew Wright on the Internet, even if it means forcibly taking all of a certain contemporary artist from Canada's search traffic for my own. This I swear to you.''
Finally, Andrew Wright the artist lamented the depths to which the spat had fallen before turning a deaf ear to further goading from Andrew Wright the comedian, who crowed despite his victory in the search-engine war.
''I am shutting my ears to your silence,'' bellowed Andrew Wright the comedian. ``Mark my words, I will hear none of it.''

This all sounds a little. . .melodramatic. I mean, funny, yes, but a little over the top. Who cares which Andrew Wright ends up top? Someone looking for the comedian, gets the comedian. Or vice versa.

Heh, exactly.
No one really cares about it, but both eventually get some extra publicity, even if it's silly. I mean, most people here probably hear the name Andrew Wright for the first time by means of this very post. As they say, 'no publicity is bad publicity'.

As far as I know, no one else with my name has a blog. A Google search for my name brings up a lot of results related to me and only a few related to people with a similar name (mostly my first and last names reversed). Getting into a war about search engine ratings is kind of lame, though.

| It sounds like the both of them obviously have a little too much time on their hands to make such a big deal over something that is really of not much relevance considering. I think I might be in the minority there, but I am very unfamiliar with the whole blogging thing and while I can see that it's a growing trend, I can't help but find myself not being a part of all of that myself. It was an interesting read itself, but I have to tell you that I cannot see how someone can get so worked up over the fact that they are not the top of the google list on the search engine. Who knew that something so simply would get someone so fired up? Power to them I guess, but it seems a bit trivial to me, but what do I know? Thanks for the read though. It was kind of interesting considering it shows you what lengths people will go to in order to top another one I suppose. |

My professor, named Jim Swift, and some news reporter have been battling it out for the top spot on Google for Jim Swift for some time ago. My prof is an idiot though, all link to the NBC news reporter!
And I have been fighting with some stuffed animal company for "Rashy" for a while. Currently he is winning. Better get to more SEO and more back links 
It sounds like the artist was taking it too seriously and was being too insulting, but whatever. Its all funny in the end.
