G'Day

Wondering if what I am experiencing is a bug or a virus.

With some websites, (one specifically), when I shut it off (sometimes, not every time), it keeps opening lots of new windows with the web page in it - the only way to stop it is to start the Task Manager and end task on them all.

It so far has only happened in IE, but I've not tried in other platforms. It also has only occured so far if I close a tab that the specific website is in.

I have Vista 64bit

The website is a phpBB version 3 (no idea of any mods).

So, anyone else experienced this?

Some sites do this to me too, but that's just a whole lot of advertising pop-ups opening up. What loads in the new pages that open?

If it's just the one website, it's probably the website's doing and your computer and browser are most likely clean. If you have doubts though, there are plenty of tools that can remove all the nasties, you just need to google for them.

I remember there was a very efficient tool that removed pretty much anything that stuck to explorer, called hijackThis, I think... It had the word 'this' in it's name anyway. I have no idea if it still works for the new versions of explorer, but it did wonders for me several years ago.

If it is one particular site, I would think it would be that site that is producing this. If it is a group of sites that have something similar about them say php3 it might be something todo with php3 or if the sites are all hosted on a server that could cause this.

I'm thinking it is most likely IE or Windows, because I have heard other people describe the same phenomenon, but not with the site that causes it for me.

In my case, it reloads the same phpBB again and again.

In another case I heard about (ironically, on the BB above), it was a photo-viewing website.

The only commonality was IE and windows, although I don't know if they had a 64 bit version, and whether that would be important or not.

Also, I run PC-Cillin on my machine.

Do note that we aren't talking about the PHP language rather the forum phpBB.

And yes it can always be an IE bug.

I have a feeling this is a virus. My sister's computer recently got infected by a virus or two and ever since then, her browsers (both IE and Firefox) have been acting very sporadically, and they open up tab after tab after tab once in a while. I'm going to format her machine this weekend because I was unable to clean out the viruses well enough.
