cookies on domain and subdomain

I have a cookie that is set on my domain which works fine for the domain, but i want the subdomain to be able to access it, but it doesn't seem to be working

php.net says to set the domain as '.example.com'
I've tried that in my code but the subdomain still can't use it

remove the dot ... it will work i have tried it it works on my server .. i guess the servers dont always behave the same ways ... hmmmmmmm

i've treid removing the dot and its still not working on the subdomain
