So...in Ohio we have this writing tournament/club/program called Power of the Pen where we get subjects/prompts...here's one of mine that I like...
Power of the Pen
Prompt- You are exiled from society. Describe your new environment.
“Teddy, I Love You”
“Teddy, I love you,” the boy’s squeaky, youthful voice crooned as he embraced me. “I’m never going to let you go. “ But alas, not only were these words sheer nonsense, they were shattered before I even became aware of it. Although I had expected to be loved and embraced for many more lifetimes, there came a fateful day when I was forgotten, as if I were just a broken toy from a happy meal. Todd, that boy whose voice had once been squeaky and loving, now had acquired a voice that became deep and uncaring. He had grown less and less dependent of me, and the last time I saw his face he was in a surly mood, and had thrown me under the bed. I had expected him to fish me out sooner or later, but he did not. Day by day, time passed, and I still rested uncomfortably under the bed.
So here I lay, several uneventful forevers later. Amongst cobwebs and old board games, sleeping with dust bunnies and use, broken toys, I lay here, forgotten and heartbroken that my once best friend, my sole purpose for existence, did not care for me anymore. He would never caress me again, never squeeze me in a death grip hug. No, those days were long gone, for Todd had grown up.
Slowly, as I waited for freedom of this exile, I realized the room I was in, the bed I was under, had become the property of another. Todd’s little brother Timmy, was in possession of the entire room, and it was filled with lively, youthful happiness from wall to wall. That is, except for under the bed. I still lay here untouched for many days, longing for the human touch, the human embrace. From my position under the bed, I could just glimpse the sight of a line of plush stuffed animals on his shelf. As they looked at me, I saw pity in their eyes, for some, it was more than pity, for others, merely scorn and contempt. I longed to be up there with them, my brown fur radiant and glowing, yet no one searched for me, or found me.
Perhaps, one day, Timmy will, by accident, find me helpless under the bed, and keep me as his own and show the love Todd had shown. Perhaps he will dust me off and place me gently onto his shelf to shine among the other stuffed animals. Maybe I would even sit on his bed, as I had with Todd. But sadly, that time was not today.
Now, under the bed, I lay here quite uncomfortably, yet that cannot be mended, for I am merely a teddy bear, and the ability to move is not provided. So, as I sullenly await my escape, I yearn to hear those lovely words, “Teddy I love you.” But until then, I am merely a victim of this horrible exile.
What did you think? Please give me some advice if you think this needs some spiffing up. _________________ One worries so much about tomorrow, that he does not cherish what he has today. |

Very nice idea; quite original for that prompt too.
I haven't much advice, except here:
| Quote: | | Amongst cobwebs and old board games, sleeping with dust bunnies and use, broken toys, |
I think you mean to say used.
And here:
| Quote: | | But alas, not only were these words sheer nonsense, * they were shattered before I even became aware of it. | It sounds like you need an 'also,' or something to connect the sentence here * (But it may just be me.)
Lastly:
| Quote: | | I still lay here untouched for many days, longing for the human touch, the human embrace | I think it may sound better without using the word 'touch' twice (untouched/touch).
I was just being really nitpicky about it, and those are only suggestions. But, your short story is really very good, and has got such a creative setting. Great job! _________________ Meow. |
