This is so 'Clockwork Orange', this idea of changing a person's behavior in response to pain. I honestly didn't think they did that in civilized countries these days.
While I agree that treating mental patients that way can outwardly improve their behavior, this is not a real solution, just conditioning, it does not solve any problem for that individual, just makes life easier for their caretaker. _________________ Tarakana NET |

This type of conditioning was used traditionally on animals and it is something that has never really sat well with me even in my studies in psychology. That kind of negative reinforcement only seems to breed fear in animals and I would imagine in the patients who are obviously there because they need some kind of health with the issues that are going on with them. I just cannot for the life of me see how it is justifiable for them to lash out those kind of supposed forms of treatment when to me it would seem that they would do more harm than good.
I know that someone might think that the initial results would be positive in dealing with someone who say has anger issues, but in the long run I would imagine that the person who had been exposed to that kind of treatment would either become a candidate for abuse themselves and pass on the same kind of learned behavior to those around them when they are acting in a fashion that is deviant to the norm. Or on the flip side the person who has been fed the negative reinforcement might eventually snap and turn on those around them if they perceive any kind of threat or danger. It seems like a very risky, very dangerous practice in the name of helping people because it does not seem like that is a logical outcome.
Given the day in age that we live in there are so many other options out there for people in the form of therapy, medications or even a combination of both. I cannot for the life of me see how someone can justify treating another human being that way regardless of what is wrong with them. That kind of treatment center just reminds me of the earlier days in the psychiatric world before the advances. It's really frightening and I would hope that eventually someone steps in and says that the practices in treatment aren't right. It's just asking for trouble. |
