I was unable to contact anything on LP since about 8PM last night (Apr 13). It only came back around 7:15PM today (Eastern Daylight Time). The name servers couldn't find the various domain names running on your server.

Any clue to the problem?

Yep, everything was down, even Trel's other sites. 10 hours in without any point of contact nor anything said to us combined with a web based competition I am organising got me to change my DNS.

Usually not something I'd do but Trel really left us hanging. With another late PBPP change over yet to happen and a complete disappearance of LLP, there wasn't any reason to not fear the worst.

Having said that, I'll be happy to switch back here once Trel explains what happened. Could it have been an attack, I remember a discussion years back on one that caused similarly long downtime.

It's been a wakeup call for me. I moved here temporarily three years ago when the server company that I rented space from went out of business (without any notice whatsoever). I ended up staying because what I was getting for the price of a few posts per month was as good as and often better than what I could get from commercial hosting companies. Back then few companies actually did Linux or *BSD hosting and I absolutely refuse to use Microsoft products.

Then I got lazy. Maybe it's time I started shopping around again for a commercial hosting company. Linux is now ubiquitous in the server world (so I won't be forced into using Windows and thereby committing a mortal sin) and the prices for hosting are about a quarter a day and less.

Same here. It kinda scared me to be honest because for a while I thought that Trel actually just closed down the sites as some of us have been thinking was going to happen for a while now. The server has never been down for that long that i can remember.

I wish Trel and other higher up people could be around more often anymore to help assure us that things are okay.

The thing that sucks the most is that alot of the paid hosts arent as good as LLP. And i've tried many in the past couple of years and always ended up coming back.

As loyal as i want to be to LLP, It's kinda makes me feel very weary to depend on the hosting or to even expect it to be up much longer.

The only big reason as into why didn't already change them to another host was because i couldn't really put up the site elsewhere without my mysql database backups, so i just decided to wait it out and hope it'd come back on. Glad that it did Smile

Moderators have a way to contact Trel. I suppose we can ask Harvey/Harvey to try his luck.

And we are going to have the May 2007 incident soon if we still don't get our PBPP dealt with.

I think it probably will be now that its half way through the month. I can't see Trel resetting it, he'd have to give half a month next month to make it fair or you'd only get 2 weeks

I dont mind that the site was down, but it was down for over 16 hours for me (down at 8am still wasn't up at 11pm for me), what annoys me is that it was brought back up, but no explanation was given for the downtime

I don't think it's an attack.

Probably the server went out, then brought back to power.

That is exactly what happened.

Server lost power and needed a manual file system check to bring it back up.

I've been wrapped up with other tasks such as federal taxes due yesterday. You'll forgive me for being distracted. Wink PBPP due in April are 0 PBPP for all hosting accounts. I figure that taxes are bad enough so no need for me to get mine in too.

If anyone has website issues related to the outage just put in a support ticket and it'll be checked. Also the security system was upgraded to help prevent some common 406 errors we were seeing.

OK, so I do not want to change my server at any point, but if there is any chance that LP will end its services, will I be left high and dry, since i got my domain from here?

If i went to a paid server, can i purchase my .ru domain or do i lose it?

The .com.ru, .net.ru, and .org.ru domains are considered legacy due to the RIPN completely dropping support for new registrations.

The RIPN system does not allow for domain name transfers without a lengthy registration process with the RIPN and as such it is not possible to transfer the domain name. We do not support pointing the domains elsewhere due to administrative problems with supporting it.

If you would like greater portability it might be a good idea to purchase a domain name from an ICANN accredited registrar and transition to that domain name instead.
