Does anyone here use or have tried out G OS?

It's the first Linux of any kind that really makes me want to try it out. It's just much more prettier and everything than the other versions of linux that i've seen.

The one thing that is weird about it is how all the default apps are online google apps. this is cool if you are guaranteed an internet connection for ever, but it sucks if you are ever without the net for any time and cant access your docs or anything.

They say google doesn't make it, but its just weird how it's G OS (i think they said it stands for Good OS, or something like that?) but it runs all google's apps and such.

I am thinking maybe Google is the one behind it, but they don't want everyone to know it's them or what not? until its finished? But i bet if google isn't the one who is actually creating it in some way they will probably end up buying the computer that makes it Wink Wink ha.

Anyways it looks really nice and pretty.
The screenshots i've seen kinda look like a mixture of all the major os's, uhh which are windows and mac, ha. But it still has a bit of the linux feel as far as i can tell from all the screenshots i've seen of linux and GOS.

So what do you all think of it? have you tried it? Are you using it? Do you like it?

I'm going to install it on one of my pc's soon and see what its like.

okay i'm using G OS now, but as a live cd, and its pretty nice and smooth even when it's not afull installation.

The only problem I am having now is that firefox is saying every single word that i am typing is mispelled, i know i'm not that bad, ha, but i bet its because its a live boot and the firefox spellcheck dictionary isnt installed.

I also wish that there was a way to enable clear type and such or something for linux. I'm googling it right now, and i can't seem to find an easy solution. I checked the G OS setting and i can't seem to find it anywhere. I know it probably wont be called clear type, but must be some kinda smoothing setting.

anyways i'm going to explore this a little bit more :d and then i'll report.

Ive booted an older version before and didn't like it that much compared to other distros i have used. there are a couple computers based on the gos made by everex now (they are cheap and use via c7 i believe). as for the google connection, i don't think it is actually supported by google. There is supposedly a goobuntu distro that is used by google but who knows how different it is from ubuntu. Also the wikipedia article states that google contributes with ubuntu patches so that link seems to be more definate

edit:
yup

gOS Rocket is based on the Ubuntu 7.10 distribution. It uses the Enlightenment 17 window manager instead of the usual GNOME or KDE desktops, to create a desktop that has similar usability to Mac OS X. This is possible because of the flexibility of Enlightenment. Enlightenment acts both as an X window manager, and as a desktop environment. Therefore Rocket works on systems as low end as a 350 MHz Pentium II with 196 MB of RAM.[3] But a typical gOS system would use as a minimum a 1 GHz Pentium III with 256 MB RAM.

it is but its not an official ubuntu distro if the goobuntu distro exists which it should seeing how google recognizes it and so does ubuntu's creator. it is more of an official ubuntu release(not public) not a third party build off of the ubuntu distro

I tried gOS the other day off the live cd. I didn't actually install it or anything, but I got the gist of what the purpose of the OS actually is.

It's not being made by Google as far as I understand, but it's almost like an unofficial Google OS. Almost every Google service is linked to in there, which I suppose goes to show just how much you can do without ever leaving Google's domain.

But what didn't impress me as much was the fact that the whole thing is basically a themed Ubuntu with shortcuts that have icons. I clicked on Gmail and I expected a window to come up with Gmail... But I didn't expect it to just open Firefox and link me to Gmail. I wanted it to look like I was opening an application.

So essentially what they've done is just put my bookmarks on my desktop in a dock. Meh. That's why I'm not installing gOS, even though it was fairly nice.

It's not a particularly impressive distribution in terms of features. But it looks cool, that's for sure.

gOS, this name makes me think it is a OS that has something to do with Google, but "gOS is not affiliated with Google or their partners" disappoint me.

I am still expecting that Google would has its own Linux distro,

They have their own internally. I wouldn't be surprised if google buys gOS when it takes off.

Although gOS doesn't have many feature built in, you still can add alot. It comes with all you really need to do anything on and i was surprised by how many games it came with (simple games).

But i removed it from my computer because i had to choose from the Grub to load it or my windows vista, and the linux was the first choice so it'd always load that if i didn't select anything. the problem with that is that I can't do much on linux as i can in windows, so there was really no point in even using it full time if i have a legal copy of vista and xp, since linux is more limited.

If i didnt have a legal copy of windows, i'd really go with gOS.

i have yet to really try vista, my girlfriend has home premium its all ive used, isnt home basic very limited.
As for the google links directly, the xandros distro on my eee came with links to google docs and igoogle and in webmail tab a link to gmail. so gOS isn't the only OS that is coming with those links. i believe another OS had those links too. i may end up trying gOS 2.x rocket to see what it comes with by default. do you happen to know the system requirements i dont feel like trying it on my main pc. i have enough work to do on that as of now

yeah its very limited. check out this comparison table. Home has 3 feature checks while ultimate has 17 ha, its lame, but it works http://www.microsoft.com/windo.....hoose.mspx

Microsoft is really going to loose alot of people to linux in the next years if they don't quit charging so much for their OS. Vista isnt as great as it should have been. XP is fine. Maybe Vista will become worth the price or even using when sp2 comes out, Silly

alot of for the linux distros might link to google because google might've have supported their development in some ways since google donates to free open source projects and such. Who knows.

You can choose which option is listed first so if you wouldn't do anything the default OS would be windows. I don't remember exactly how to do it but I'm sure Google knows Smile

I'm going to try this one out, even though Ubuntu disappointed me really bad, gOS might just work fine for me. It wouldn't be my standard OS though, since I need some applications (for school) that only work on Windows.

But before I start downloading, is it actually worth my time to check this out or should I just continue using XP? Does it actually have any advantages over XP or not? Because I don't want to waste bandwith for something I won't use afterwards Smile

i don't like being counterproductive to the linux movement but is there something wrong with windows that is making you want to switch because it goes to the if it ain't broke don't fix it philosophy. also you have to weigh in what applications you are running under windows, cost alone if you run some propriety software it can make it not worth changing. also you will end up having to learn new software and the minor dfferences.

if you have a working copy of windows xp or vista, then there is no point into switching to any other os especially linux Silly

gOS looks pretty, but the core is still linux/ubuntu so i don't think it's as usable as Windows is.. yet, maybe someday they will make it that way though.

there are plenty of reasons to switch to other operating systems besides windows. the only reason i have windows xp pro on a computer is because i need it for some work, if that wasn't the case i would have no reason to use windows.
