whats up with the naming structure of the Grand Theft Auto series?

The new one is called GTA 4, but wouldn't it really be gta 6? Or even 7 if you count "Liberty Stories" as a release?

Since GTA III was released we had vice city, which should've been 4, and then San Andreas which should be 5, and then maybe Liberty Stories, if you count that, so the new one should be either 6 or 7? or does it continue the story of where III left off?

I'm just a little confused here. Can someone please explain this.

Smile
thanks

Having played the GTA series for a total of about 5 minutes, I'm hardly the expert on this subject. But I'd guess that the mechanics of Vice City, San Andreas and Liberty Stories were all exactly the same, and therefore were all considered "GTA 3."

GTA4 is an entirely new game with new everything, not to mention the online modes and stuff like that, and therefore is considered the 4th in the series.

I've heard very good things about GTA4, but I doubt I'll ever play it - I never really got into the games.

It's hyped too much. They claim they added new game play elements but in the end it's yet another GTA with exactly the same point as the previous 9 (Yes this is the 10th GTA assuming you count the expansion for the first one as a real game). They're simply trying to get as much money as possible out of GTA before people start to think "oh it's more of the same". And THAT is why they started a hype around it.

There are some new things added to GTA 4, such as built in online multiplayer features which will be awesome.

I know there are mods that can put the previous versions online, but they aren't official and have many bugs.

I always wanted a universe like GTA to be online. I thought the MATRIX ONLINE was going to be like that, but wasn't and totally sucked.

I've always enjoyed GTA honestly. At least III and on, SA was okay, but had some annoying almost impossible missions that didn't really make any sense anyways, but Vice City was nice.

I'm interest in 4, but i only play games on my pc, and it'll probably take forever for them to finally release it for the pc. I know it took forever for San Andreas to be released.

i didn't know that there were 9 titles though.

More of the same isn't necessarily a bad thing. There are plenty of games which I could keep playing forever. Super Smash Brothers (the original N64 one) is a prime example of this. It's been almost 10 years since its release, and I still play the game.

I haven't had a chance to play the Gamecube one (never bought a Gamecube) or the Wii one (damn Australian release date), but I'm looking forward to it, and, if it's too different from the N64 version, I'm likely not to like it.

Multiplayer is a big new gameplay element I'd say. I wouldn't complain about it Silly Having said that, I'm not convinced I'd like this game, because I don't really like the style of the thing.

I've heard from several people that the online mode isn't that great.

Not sure if I will get this right but it was
GTA
GTA 2
GTA london
GTA 3
GTA vice city
GTA san andres
GTA liberty stories
GTA 4
so it should be 8 now if they just used number. How come no one actually played any of the first 3 games? was top down view not suitable for this game? Not a big fan of the series I may have 2 or 3 lying around at home but seemed like more hype then it was worth for me and it certainly doesnt deserve 8 games made so fast

I've heard that the components of multiplayer could make for games by themselves. There will always be people with different tastes.

And yes, I agree with you somewhat on the excessive hype this game has created however the added detail level and multiplayer support almost justify it alone. The single player has also not been neglected providing 50+ hours of gameplay if I recall correctly.

Depends which ones you count, there are also the vice city stories and liberty city stories versions for one of the handheld platforms.

And I played both the first two games (GTA and GTA2) and loved them, remember this was almost 10 years ago so the top down view wasn't a problem. Does anyone else remember the remote control cars, the US army chasing you and machine gun mounts for your car?

The view was fine for the time but the series really took off at 3 and that is when it got all the press good and bad

Funnily enough, no Silly I think it's in part that, and in part the open-ness of the game. I tend to like fairly linear games, or fairly simple party games (although some party games I hate).

And I think I played one of the first two at a friend's house a while back. I think I liked it Silly I guess the transition into more realism turned me off the game for some reason Silly (that and I probably didn't play it longer than a couple of hours - probably not enough time to get bored when you're playing with a friend).

The version naming of games is different from that of softwares.

It's also the same for Battlefield.

Battlefield 1942 is the first, followed by Battlefield Vietnam, which is the second, but followed by Battlefield 2, which is the third in the series.

They don't just give the numerical in the name like what you do in softwares, rather, they give it based on the story.

If it's a spin-off you get names appended, like Game: Story Name.

If it's on a new story, Game <Number>.

WEll, I dis play the first games. I've played GTA london a few times at a friends house. I actually bought GTA 2 myself and I really liked that one.

(I also played III, vice city and San Andreas)

I actually think the top down view worked quite well, but the change to a third person view in III made the series a lot nicer. I'm actually quite a fan of the GTA series and I'm actually even planning on buying a playstation 3 just so I can play GTA 4. (Otherwise I'd have to wait till the pc version comes out. )

I'm assuming the numbered GTA games are the main series, while the rest are the subseries. I could be wrong, as I don't know the stories of all GTA games perfectly.

I agree. It's just repetitive at this point. A few new things along with the same old things isn't that exciting. Just wait a few months: used game stores will be flooded with GTA 4 I bet. Many people fall for the hype, get home: play it for a month or so, then sell it.
