Quote:
LONDON (Reuters) - A British man celebrated his 60th birthday in unexpected style at the weekend when a 50 pence ($1) bet on the horses turned him into an instant millionaire.

Fred Craggs, from Yorkshire in northern England, was not even aware of his win when he walked into a branch of the William Hill betting agency to see how he had done with his accumulator bet.

When he was informed of his good fortune he was said to have turned rather pale and muttered that he had better go home to tell his wife.

His coup was selecting eight winners running at various courses around the country -- starting with one called "Isn't That Lucky" and finishing with "A Dream Come True" -- at odds of 2,000,000 to one.

"This is the most amazing bet ever placed since betting shops were made legal in 1961," William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe said on Monday.

Lucky old man Exclamation

It doesn't tell that how much money the old man won, but that 50 pence ($1) made him a millionaire, that would be very a lot.

I have no any experience like that. I agree that there must be someone that is really lucky from the beginning and that luck would make his/her life easy, or everything would be easy. Like the prizes are just there and waiting for the lucky one to pick them up. While the others would work very very hard to reach them.

To wager on horses race is gambling here, Smile and there is no such race in the mainland of China, so, even if I want to win some money from it, it is impossible. Or, maybe I can lay my bet through internet. But I am quite sure that I could win nothing Crying or Very sad

I do not know a lot of people who have really great luck in the whole horse betting on races or anything else, but it is nice to hear that someone does have good luck and fortune out there. I think it must have been a shock for him to say the least and while I am not sure how much he won, I say it sounds like it was a really nice twist of fate for him and his wife. I am sure they can use the extra money as most people can easily use extra money when it passes their way.

I probably would not have any luck in that kind of situation either, but I really do not get into the whole gambling thing. Although in this case the man really did not lose that much had he not won I would imagine. Thanks for posting. It is nice to know some people out there have good luck and fortune.

Good for him. Instant millionaire using just $1.

Still, I hope no one would quit their job after reading this and start betting on horses. Silly

Dangit, you should have posted this earlier... Oh wait, I don't have a job anyways. I guess I can blow all my money on the races. Sweet!

Oh... Wink

So, since you have not a job. It is not a big deal to put all your money on that. Umm, that would be about 1$, am I right about the number? Very Happy Very Happy I am kidding.

Some of my friends did gambling on football match years ago, but I have never heard about anyone who won big money back. It seems that no one could win easily. Yeah, there is lucky guy. Maybe the next one would be you, if you could play this game long enough and last to your 60. Cool

I can't believe anyone can be that lucky Very Happy

And I think he won 2.000.000$ no? I'm not an expert but if he placed a bet of 1$ and the odds were 2.000.000 to 1 doesn't he get the 2 million dollars?

thing is - he placed a bet of 50p ($1) and got back £1,000,000 ($2,000,000) BUT that's not because the odds were 2,000,000/1. His bet was an accumulative bet, meaning he had to have all x-amount of horses, win. If the first one won, then the odds were better on the second one, etc etc.

His final odds were actually greater than 2,000,000/1 BUT UK bookmakers, in the main, have a rule that they won't pay out more than £1,000,000 in a single transaction. So, he was actually due more than he got.

Still £1,000,000 would definitely do me!

A local bookmaker to myself actually was quite broke, and pledged his last couple of pounds on those seven races Frankie Dettori won on the same day. Hense why he is now the local bookmaker! Although he has never revealed how much he actually won, it must have been a fair amount, firstly to buy the shop and equip it, but also to be able to run a potentially dangerous game of being a bookmaker!

Funnily enough, he actually said in the public house the previous night to the win, that he would back all seven for a laugh...... Most people in the public house laughed, nobody bothered trying the same. Oh, the power of hindsight!

Ha, he is so lucky. I have never believe in betting, those betting companies have made calculated risk and the eventual losers are those punters.
