|
|
Many of us have a folder called "downloads" or whatever and by default almost all of our downloaded files get placed in there.
Over time this folder builds up with alot of junk, and can take up alot of space on the hard driver.
My questions is how do you manage this? How often do you clean it? Do you use a sort program? Or another program that automatically maintains it?
I use firefox, and flashget and they both download to there.
Some of the files have weird names to them, so i have no idea as into what they are, and some of the compressed zip and rar files have lame password protections on them. So do you keep the original compressed files, or just uncompress them and keep the contents, and delete the compressed archive?
How do you organize the folder the way you want? such as put programs you want to keep in a special folder within the download folder, or just leave it a mess like me?
I'm just trying to find tips so i can better manage mine. it's a complete mess and i have no idea of what many of the files are.
I know there was a auto sort extension for firefox that you can set special places for certain file extensions to save, such as rar and zip files into a folder called "archives" and another for images, and one more for exe files.
Do you delete the files you don't want to keep soon after downloading them? or do you go in once a month and do a cleaning yourself?
it'd be so easy to just delete the entire folder, but there are some programs for some reason that I actually want to keep, even though i can just download them again if i ever need them which is weird.
What I am thinking about doing is just burning the entire folder to data dvd's and just deleting it. That would allow me to have them all backed up incase i ever needed a file, but then if i did that i'd end up with alot of discs full of crap i don't really need, so it creates another problem.
isn't there a firefox extension that will allow you to open a file on a server rather than download it? I know IE lets you open them and it saves them to a temp folder. Firefox seems to force you to save it. If i had an extension such as that then i could just open ones i don't need. such as the compressed file and then i could extract the contents and the temp file would just be cleaned automatically during automatic system maintenance.
anyways how do you deal with all of this? and what are some suggestions and tips?

thanks | For either Firefox or Internet Explorer, it isn't wise to open a file directly.
For both browsers, if you choose to open the file instead of saving it, it will download the file to the Temp folder, then open it. Take note that the file may not get deleted, and you find your hard disk space decreasing as time passes by.
The smart way is just to save the file, open it, and when you don't need it anymore, delete it.
I don't have any folder for my downloads. I save everything to my Desktop first, then decide whether to store the file somewhere else after using it, or delete it. _________________

When I download stuff, I always try to find a way to put it in the proper location immediately. Photoshop brushes move to the Photoshop folders, fonts are installed, applications are installed and the setup deleted, etc..
Whatever remains in my download folder is doomed to be deleted whenever I feel like it. _________________ If you can read this, my post is on an alternating background. |

So I have decided from then on I will download everything to the Desktop, and from there if I do not wish to keep something I can delete it easily. _________________
