i am thinking about finally moving all my domains to .net. I mean i'll keep the .com's of the existing domains i own, but i should also buy the .net for the, and only buy .net for now on.

Why? Because i think .net fits much better with a websiteo n the net, and to me net looks alot more attractive than .com's.

Also alot of the good .com's are taken. Either way i always like .net more, but it seemed like if you want the most traffic you would have to get a .com. But i don't really believe that anymore. Sure mostly everyone thinks .com when they are going to a site, but if you make a good enough site they'll remember the .net.

Also it seems that .net is the second "default" domain after .com and then its .org. personally i hate .orgs. i've only loved .net's and .us's,

so what do you all think of this? Do you like .net's better personally or what?

Again I think it is always safe to get the .com if you want the most traffic, but the TLD shouldn't really matter if its a super good site.

One of my favorite forums online is neowin.net and the .com doesn't work, and i never had a problem with remembering it. Silly

I also like .net, but because of common usage of .com, I normally register both.

.com, .net, and .org were all introduced around the same time. .com were for companies, .net for networks, and .org for non-profit organisations. But as Internet progresses, no one really cares.

It's true that you get spotted more if you have the .com extension of a name that's widely used.

For example, there may be johnsmith.com, johnsmith.net and you happen to have johnsmith.biz. If someone is looking for a clan of that certain name, chances are search results will return the .com first and they will visit it, unless they know your exact URL.

.net is nice, but it is annoying when the .com is already registered, because it may create confusion for your visitors.
But if you make a good website (and the 'competition' is crap) it should be less of a problem. For some domains, .net sounds better than .com. I think it's a matter of taste.

I like .net, but I have to admit, I prefer .ws and .nu. I have two .nu domains and I loooove them!

.com is the default, at least at this decade. But .net is very popular also, especially when people think about network...

People will try xx.net if they find xx.com is not what they want. However, it's again a default action to register both .net and .com at the same time if one really put effort to build web site.

It's simple:
.com - for comercial websites
.org - for organizations
.gov - for government websites
.net - for all other websites

But just think about that: .com is really the most popular of all. The people check first yyy.com than yyy.net or .org and also sometimes happen that the domain you want exist as .com and all the people check that site instead of yours.

In my opinion, for personal sites the best option is xxx.net, all the text before is to explain the con's of that type of domain.

Pardo88, .gov, .edu, and to an extent, .org, are the only ones that follow their intent. .com and .net are used for almost anything.

As for which one to choose, I lean to .com names but .net is good for two things: names for which only the .com is taken (of course, there is the problem of losing some traffic this way), and as you said Scar, it can sound better and more appropriate.

.gov and .edu are actually regulated quite strictly.
