Do you have Invision Power Board as an installed script in the Scripts Library?

Just in case if you' were going to ask why,

it's because Invision has deemed IPB v1.3 to be breaking the rules if being distributed by such installer scripts like Fantastico or Lifelesspeople's network own installer, Open Installer (or what ever Wink)

And to add to that, if you were to purchase a version of IPB, I think anything past 2.0.0 or 2.1.0 you can manually install that and it would work. I chose that route and it works fine.

just a late note, phpbb, however, is installable on the open installer, and i find that to be a superior alternative to the security flaws that you find with invision power board. just take one look at this forum.

Oh, and Trel would have to pay a license for each account. So that would make it pretty bad.

No idea. I think you would need to do a little work...

TO INSTALL ANY FORUM HOST:

Go to downloads, and zip download IPB. Then, upload the zip file to your server. Extract the zip file, and you've gotten it installed.

That's simple. You just have to extract a zip file.

Isn't that easy?

I never mess around with it though, it would need a PHP host... most forums are in PHP.

but, there's UBB... it uses CGI.

I don't know if cPanel works with CGI.

I stick with phpBB, it's free, and a lot more stuff than anything else, especially saying that it has more features than vBulletin, and vBulletin is reeaallly expensive.

That's why there's phpBB.
They get real fancy!

vBulletin=at least $30 a month- $360 a YEAR!

So, I don't think you would want to pay a license.

USE PHPBB!

Much better than vB.

vB... I've tried the demo, not so impressive.

phpBB is free, because the best things out there are free...

So, that's why there is phpBB.

Really. phpBB is the best one out there. But, you can't do zip downloads for phpBB hosting sites (freeforumhost.com, editboard.com, forumactif.com, createforum.com, etc.)

That's why there's phpBB.com.

So, you might not want to pay a license. Then, there's InvisionFree, you can't zip download either.

So, always stick with phpBB... you zip download, and then you upload it. Donload the latest version, phpBB 2.0.21

Have you ever even used the latest versions of invision power board or just read this some where?

If you keep up to date on the patches and fixes which are released a lot lately, then you'll be fine.

And also people choose Invision Power Board for a reason, it'll be a bit complicated to convince someone who likes invision power board and enjoys its features to move down to phpbb.

i used invision power board for years now and never had a security problem. Even had a Michael Jackson forum which a lot of people tried to attack and nothing happen.
I think most of that is due to Trel making the servers here so secure Silly but still never a real problem.

I thought that if you purchase a license under a hosting company then you can distribute the latest version of IPB?

I have seen the admin panel of Vbulliten (demo) also. There is nothing flash at all about it, so I consider it a waste of money for anyone to buy it.

I have used the demo for a real purchased IPB Cpanel, and its pretty good. I have some forums under free ipb hosters (invisionfree.com and invisionplus.net - invisionplus is better) and I think invision is actually better than vBulliten.

If go down another level, we look at SMF. I have used the admin panels of SMF and they are pretty good, but there are a lot of needed features it doesn't have and plus some features that I don't even want.

Down even further is Editboard, a free forum hoster. They have excellent service on their support forums, and their admin panels look nicer and are easier to use than basic phpbb. Some features they have which phpbb doesn't: nicer modern admin panel, HTML pages, chatbox, premade styles that are specifally made for editboard forums, you can edit any picture on your forum and change any colour, it does have ads, disable the login to admin panel ect... The list goes on.

But, there are features that Editboard does not have: post points, global announcement, umm I can't think of anymore!

And now down to an even lower level: basic phpbb.
I would not use phpbb basic. Its admin panels are ugly, lack of features and I just don't like it.

Thats my view. I hope it helps Very Happy
