I'm finding it harder and harder to see movies in theaters, as they go to DVD too quick.
If it's a bad movie that didn't do well: it goes to DVD in a few months. I believe this was common, even in the VHS days. However, now even big movies go to DVD pretty quick. Transformers, Spider-Man 3 (and so on) are all examples of this.
This just seems like a slap in the fact to people that spend money on seeing it in the theater. Renting is a lot cheaper, so going to the theater seems a bit pointless (unless you are that impatient, or simply don't rent at all).
Part of the reason of the rush, is to have movies out for Christmas, to help boost sales. But I still find it a bit stupid they are doing this to movies.
If this trend continues, I somehow think many movie theaters will shut down. Unless some major price drops happen (which I doubt), movies quick to DVD will be the new trend. Ticket sales in theaters seem to be strong now, but it's only a matter of time in my view. People simply can't continue to be ignorant to just waiting a few months to see it for cheaper.
I go to theaters only once in a while now, so I doubt I would miss them if they ever just disappeared. It's overpriced, loud and just a hassle usually. _________________ http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Main_Page

I used to be an avid cinema go-er.
As I have aged however, I can no longer put up with the noise from other film watchers. Teenagers are rude and aggressive and respond poorly to any requests to temper their behaviour, the constant rustling of sweet wrappers and slurping from soft drinks drives me nuts, but, the worst that can possibly happen is that you should go and see a comedy within 30 feet of a group of young 'urbans', the thigh slapping, hooting and almost self caricaturing hollering at anything even remotely amusing means that any subsequent dialogue is completely lost.
All in all, unless you attend at 2pm on a week day in term time, the cinema 'experience' is now one of abject misery. I for one am a huge fan of the quick DVD release times. |

The reality is that there will always be theatres. Unless technology advances to where we can *plug into* the movie. More along the lines of virtual reality. Why you might ask. Because there is no comparing the experience of watching a movie on a big screen vs. watching it on your TV. Even myself with a 63" DLP TV I will always watch certain movies in the theatre because nothing compares to the size and sound there. The Lord Of The Rings series is one example of this.
To be honest I think it is more of your lack of initiative that causes the movies to be gone from the theatres before you go to see it. After all most movies are there for around 2 months, 3 if they are really good. If you cannot make it to the theatre in 8-12 weeks then ti is lack of desire on your part, not shorter time frames at the theatre. |

I've never seen a film in a theatre, I'm not so old! I hardly ever go to the cinema because I don't feel attracted by most of new films. I sometimes see them on DVDs in my old (prehistoric) 14'' TV _________________ http://martin.com.uy

Well, if the movie theaters were to go out of buisness, the movies would come out directly on DVD, but I highly doubt that it will happen, movie theaters are pretty popular with teens to get away from parents, go on dates, or to simply hang out with friends. Sure, it's more expensive, but it's worth it to some people. _________________ “When it hurts to look back, and you're scared to look ahead, you can look beside you and your best friend will be there.”

I lime watching some of the bigger movies (like star wars, i saw numbers 1-3 there, and harry potter) at the theatres mainly because i'd never see it at another place at the size it is their or have the sound the way it is.
I go about a week after its come out, that way you dont have as many people there that can annoy you _________________ Midnight Tempest - A Sailor Moon TCG

Looks like the movie theatres I go to aren't as bad as those you people go to there are hardly people there that annoy me and in the unlikely event of some young teenagers making a lot of noise me and my friends easily solve it
I really like going to the cinema, it's much better than watching a movie at home in my opinion: the huge screen, the surround sound, ... and there are those movies that you just can't wait to see, you don't want to wait until they're released on DVD so you go to the theatres. Of course you can always download the movie you want to see before it's released, but compare your computer screen with the screen in a movie theatre
I'm not a regular movie theatre visitor though. Usually I just go the the cinema when there's a new movie that I've been waiting for. But still, I like the movie theatre and the experience of watching a movie with a lot of people. The fact that some make a lot of noise is something that you can solve, or something you just live with. Nothing is perfect is it _________________ .// Proud to be Lifeless for more then 4 years \\. |

another reason i go to the theatres, if there's a movie i want to see soon i'll go, but the theatres are getting expensive now. its about £7 for us where i live in the UK, at adult rate, its just over £5 for student rate. luckily when i go with my brother, he gets a free carer with him, but thats only if we want to see the same movie which doesn't happen often. I think the last one we saw together was star wars revenge of the sith _________________ Midnight Tempest - A Sailor Moon TCG

blinkin flip - where do you go to the cinema? iraq?? lol
the only time I ever go is to see a movie with my kids, so it's always around 7pm, and on a weeknight. The cinema is full of kids, and there's never any noise to put me off the film (except when Charlotted died - all the kids sobbing would have brought a tear to a glass eye!)
remember when people used to applaud when the movie finally started? man, that was just embarassing!! (wait - i bet they still do that in the US!!) |

I only go to see films I think will be worth seeing on the big screen - for example Transformers on IMAX in Glasgow was absolutely amazing but seeing a comedy or something like that doesn't do it for me - The Heartbreak Kid was funny but I could've waited for dvd whereas Transformers, the Uruk-hai rushing Helms Deep or Anakin vs Obi Wan (too much CG for my liking) just cannot be beaten on the big screen
My fondest memory of any movie though is the original Star Wars being released a few years ago, remastered blah blah. Who cares? I was just over the moon because I was too young the first time round |

Why is it a slap in the face for movies to go to DVDs so quickly? Again, it's a question of what you're willing to pay. If you're willing to pay the $10 or however much it costs to go to see a movie, then no-one's ripping anyone off. It's how much going to see a movie costs. Period.
Of course it's cheaper than renting a DVD. A movie theatre has much greater running costs than a video store. The grounds are at least 10 times bigger, if not much more, depending on the number of cinemas they have. There's greater power consumption, a greater initial outlay for all the technology, and a lot more people having to serve you.
Personally, if there's a movie I really want to see, then I'd go see it in the Cinemas, because, as Necromis said, it enhances the experience. The screen and the sound are that much bigger, it just makes it much more immersive.
Sure, there's a chance you'll be stuck with some 13-year-old school kids, who won't shut up during it, but if you get there at the right time (ie, not just after school, perhaps later on in the evening), then you're going to be just fine.
So yeah, there's definitely still a point in going to the cinemas, and things coming out on DVD quicker is a good thing - you'll get to see it again (should you want) sooner. |

At least in my country Uruguay, i think there's another cause to the drop-downs in the theatres and it is the price of the overall experience, usually when you go to watch a movie you do not only go and pay your price ticket, you want your pop and something to drink, and those prices in the last years suffered a sensitive price increment in addition to the price of the ticket itself.
Some years ago i used to go to the cinema once every two weeks, because it was cheap and i was able to do something else such as have a late dinner or go somewhere else, nowadays it's just the movie.
But as a other said before, there is no comparison to the experience of watching a movie in a big screen with great audio. I usually go to the theatre when the movie has great visual effects.
Finally it's probably me, but i fell that there are not so many good movies as years ago, so usually i wait to the DVD release |

| If it is something that I want to see I will usually make a point to go see it in theaters. Yes, I will be the first one to admit that it is kind of a pain to go and see a film where there is a crowd of people who are acting noisy and impossible, but that does not always happen each time you go. I honestly have gotten to the point where I will go earlier in the day because on the one hand it is a lot more inexpensive to go at that time as opposed to going in the evening. Plus, the daytime crowd is one that is pretty mild as opposed to the night crowd that can get a bit loud and rowdy. That is not to say that I go early in the morning, but I usually go when they have a discounted ticket price because yes I am cheap about spending a lot of money on things. I do not see the point of spending ten dollars for a ticket when I can spend about four in the afternoon. Plus, I have learned for the most part that I very seldom will go to an opening night simply because that is usually when the crowds are the biggest. However, even though a DVD sometimes offers a quieter alternative, it is nice to get a break away from home for a little while to just sit back and enjoy being out. Sure, it is probably easier to rent at home or buy a DVD, but there are nights when it is simply enjoyable just to be out for a while. At least that is why I still try to go and see movies in theaters at least once a month is possible. |

I rarely ever go to the cinema, or watch movies in general. I prefer books or TV series, really. However, when I do watch a movie, I rather watch it on TV or on my computer than at the cinema. I guess the point of going to the cinema is more of a social experience. You go to meet friends or as a date rather than to actually watch a movie. _________________ Tarakana NET |

Not really. Most people actually go to see a movie. It's not a experience to just chat with friends. People talking too much during a movie is a big mistake. I havent personally dealt with it for a while now, but when I do: I make sure to tell them to be quiet. People don't pay money to miss the movie, because of people talking and be obnoxious. If they want to talk so badly, they can go to someone's house or whatever. _________________ http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Main_Page
