These ads have been the most entertaining marketing pieces to come out of Microsoft since the full version of the commercial with Seinfeld. They're clearly biased (what marketing isn't?), but I like how they cut right to the heart of the Mac vs. PC debate.

Microsoft: PCs are cheaper! Nothing else matters, right.. right..? (Psssst.. Forget that it runs Vista too. Please.)

I love it.

It's good to critically consider your needs and budget when buying a PC (a Mac is just a PC that runs Apple software), especially laptops, so that's certainly a good part of the message.

I don't see how it is entertaining, though. It's just a consumer being filmed while shopping for a computer. Smile

If it wouldn't run vista it'd be even cheaper xD

Then again, we gotta love lenovo thinkpads for having excellent linux support.

True, but not necessarily more useful. If a customer requires Vista, it is (in the current situation) often cheaper to have it included with the product.

On the other hand, if the customer has previously purchased a Windows license which is no longer being used by another machine, it is cheaper to reuse that one.

Unfortunately it is currently not possible to buy blank laptops and a separate OS without spending more. In my opinion, this is something which should be investigated by competition regulator.

Some lesser-known manufacturers such as Zepto do offer this.

I wouldn't mind if Microsoft makes an offer to me to become one of those "Laptop Hunters". I'm not that rich anyway, and if they are going to pay for it and I'm going to keep it why not? It's not like I must use Vista after the purchase.

Unfortunately I don't live in the US.

I mean I would have made my choice fast if microsoft would give me $2000. Bye-bye regular laptops and welcome to workstation laptops (Thinkpad W700 etc... Silly ).

I like that, but it's probably still more expensive to buy machine and OS separately than combined. That's something that should change.

Not sure about currently but in the past equivalent dell systems cost the same whether linux or windows. Windows systems actually could be cheaper and had more customization options.

Actually it's still possible to order dells without OS but there have been several weird reports about it. First it's near to impossible to select it, and even if you succeed in doing it and you order more than one they'll forward your phone number to microsoft. And if microsoft can't find a windows license on your address they'll actually start telling stuff about how you should not use an illegal windows etc...

Mainly happens with companies but there have been a couple of home users who had it as well.

Doesn't that make them liable to a lawsuit? Or is this only in the US, where privacy is no longer a legal right?

Here is Apple's response to the Microsoft laptop ads.

http://www.engadget.com/2009/0.....p-hunters/

Apparently they use some magical Macs that have never crashed.

what I find funny about the Mac ads regarding viruses and spyware issues of PCs is that the only reason why there are more for PCs is due to the fact that more PCs are sold than Macs. Why make a virus that is only going to infect a small segment.

Dell business allows you to buy a computer with XP. Though it costs 99.00 more. The reason why it is cheaper to buy a PC with Vista over one with no OS is due to M$ subsidizing the price for the supplier.

And the only reason a Mac fanboy has to say about the benefit of Mac over Windows is that Mac is virus-free, full-stop.

I know a guy who is hardcore Mac user, to the point that he feels uncomfortable using PC's. I haven't got any proper reason out of him as to why Macs are superior, though, other than "It's a whole different experience..."

I don't know. The only Apple gadget I got is my iPod Touch, and while it's nice enough, and definitely faster than anything running WM6, it lacks quite a few crucial features, making it a very limited device after all.

As to the 'Hunters' commercials, Microsoft's is better! The Mac commercial is both bland and untruthful.
