I bought this memory module for my laptop, Lenovo 3000 N100 0768. It works fine except that my base score on vista went down from 3.1 to 2.5. Is there any difference between that module and this one such as the second one would raise performance? What happened is that when I put the new module in Vista Desktop Graphics performance went down for some reason. I had 2 x 512 MB Samsung PC2 5300S (M470T6554EZ3) modules in it.

My guess is that you installing the new RAM somehow screwed up your BIOS graphics settings. In most Laptops, the GfxCard does not have its own VRAM, but rather leaches off of the RAM. My laptop has a NVidia GeForce Go 6100 with 256mb of its own dedicated VRAM and leaches 50mb or so off of the System RAM, so I have a 300mb GfxCard. There is a BIOS setting that determines how much (if any) memory the GfxCard leaches off of the System RAM. Somehow, when you installed the new RAM sticks, the BIOS setting changed. If your Graphics Score went down, then you need to increase the amount of memory dedicated to your GfxCard, were as if your Graphics Score went up, you would need to decrease the amount of memory dedicated to your GfxCard. The bad news for you is that you forgot to tell us what kind of laptop you have, so you are on your own as to how to find out were that setting is in your BIOS Wink . I also fail to see the point of trading out 2 512mb sticks for a 1gb stick, unless you are planning to install another 1gb stick later.

I told which laptop I have and I left one of the 512 sticks in so I have 1.5 GB. I'm planning on getting another 1 GB stick.

*EDIT: I didn't find a setting for it in the BIOS.

Ok, I see where you are going with the new RAM, and I also relize that I am a stupid Idiot that thought that the laptop brand was the ram..... I need to get more sleep!
Here is how to acsess your BIOS:
Quote:

The information below can be used to access the BIOS from all the major suppliers of BIOS chips and the Computer Manufacturers that use them.

During the initial boot of a computer the BIOS supplier will be displayed. If OEM logo splash screen is displayed, press ESC key to see the boot up information. Press the Pause/Break key if text displays too fast.

The major BIOS suppliers are listed below and can be used to search for special BIOS updates not supplied by the Computer vendor.*

During the initial boot, if a beep or combinations of beeps is emitted from the motherboard system speaker , the system speaker must be connected to mother board to hear beep codes )[consult motherboard manual for speaker connection configuration], click on the Computer Hope (tm). (Copyright 1998-2006) link below to find the beep code definition.

As for what to do once you are in the BIOS, you are on your own. I cant find any specs on the BIOS your laptop has other than that it was made by Lenovo. Good Luck! If you have any more problems, check out this website:

Or contact me.

^ woulda helped if you woulda edited before i replied Wink

As far as your problem, if it is not a BIOS setting, maybe the new RAM you just bought cant perform as well as the old sticks. Also, the fact that you have 2 sticks of RAM of two different kinds may be a problem. Try taking out the other 512 stick and seeing if that makes a difference!

Yeah I was thinking about that. That is why I was asking about the modules above before buying.

Ok I put the two 512 modules in and the score went back up. The score was also low with just the 1 GB module so it just doesn't have the performance. Any suggestions?

I would guess that either the new 1gb stick is slower (and it shouldn't be because they are both 5300), or the computer is able to communicate with two sticks of RAM faster than 1 (kinda like a Dual Core processor). If the store you got the RAM from allows returns, try buying another one of those 1gb RAM sticks and shoving both in there and seeing what that does. Maybe you can try getting the 1gb model of the RAM you already have (Samsung PC2 5300S)

Yeah I was wondering about Dual Channel. Where I bought it only allows refunds or exchanges for defective parts.

Well, if they allow refunds for open products, go ahead and get another stick. If they don't, you can get another stick and you will have a 50/50 chance of improving your performance. I would just stick with the 2 512mb sticks if the store doesn't allow refunds on open products.

Well, I want 2 GB because I'm using up most of the 1 GB.

*EDIT Read a post on newegg and larger capacity modules naturally have a higher latency. http://www.newegg.com/Product/.....6820231129

I'm wondering if I used that module with a CAS latency of 4, would it reduce the amount my rating goes down?

I would think so. Either get one with a higher CAS Latency or get a faster stick (PC2 6400 @ 800mHz). I really dont know what to tell you. I dont have enough experience with RAM to speak from experience. I can tell you that the RAM you have now is not as good as the RAM that came with your computer. It will probably be a trade off. Do you want lots of memory or do you want fast memory? Fast memory would be better for video editing and the like, while more memory would be good for games. I will ask some of my geek friends to see if they have any suggestions for you.

This memory looks good with its lifetime warenty:

Well a lower latency means it responds faster. The PC2 6400 chip will still run at 667 MHz. Another option I'm considering is a PC2 5400 which runs at 675 MHz. I'm going to run 3d Mark in a few weeks and see what it comes up with just to check performance like pcstats does.

Yep, you gotta try to find one that has lo latency and high speed (may want to save up your money!)
