Over the last few days I have been taking notes about different portions of the website that could use improvements with the main page at http://www.lifelesspeople.com/ being the main focus for the moment.

If you would like to participate in this project just go over the L2P page of your choice and then provide the following:

Original code:

Code:

<html>
<head>
<title>page</tilte>

Changed code:

Code:

<html>
<head>
<title>page</title>

Feel free to correct the changes of others and to make additions or improvements where you think necessary or appropriate. I will take the changes I like and incorporate them into the L2P design.

This is an open community project so anyone can participate.

Among all the pages at Lifelesspeople.com (excluding the forum page, of course), I like the About page the most.

I think you should just use the About page as the index page, then add some links to where beginners can get information, like the Knowledge Base, LifelessWiki, etc.

Having a news page at http://www.lifelesspeople.com/news/ is totally redundant. Normally people expect news at the index page, instead of having to browse to the /news/ page.

You could just include the news in the index after the "About", as I suggested.

Specific changes are appreciated. Wink

Edit: Just want to elaborate.

Jacky's opinions are a good start. I like the way he suggests moving content around and would like to see others also comment in a similar way, but don't let that stop you from providing code changes or other opinions. Smile

Add a bit of style to the pages! I mean wow. Even the forums look better than the rest of the pages and it's just different shades of gray.

The sidebar. Why is it there? On some pages it spans the entire height of the page, whether it was intended or not. And, well... it just doesn't look good either way.

It'd definitely be a good thing if the look of the content on each page was consistent throughout the site. I suppose that that is what I'm trying to say.

And with that.... I'll see if I can't butter the toast I've made. At least somewhat. I actually wouldn't mind a change and go with jam instead.

I think all of the pages could use a little bit of brushing up and reorganizing. Like Vipralion said, the pages do lack consistency.

The first suggestion I have is reorganizing the basic template of the page. Moving the sidebar to the right side and changing the ad banner from horizonal to vertical and placing it in the sidebar are two changes that would give the page a better feel. Consistency with design language is critical, too.

Home page DOCTYPE (HTML):

Code:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">

Hosting page DOCTYPE (XHTML):

Code:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

If the home page was changed from XHTML to HTML to please the validator, then we need to adjust something. Many pages fail validation as well.

Also, the stylesheet should be global.

Thank you for the suggestions, but without code changes to put in place it will not get done. Wink Pick up a keyboard and lets see some code. Very Happy

See a screenshot of what my idea looks like.

It is valid XHTML and CSS.

I don't like how the right side of the quick links menu isn't in line with the right side of the text... I think that would be an improvement. However, I still think that although that is practical, it still isn't eye catching.

Agreed. Though, the baseline idea of that seems very good. I think it would be a change of pace which is well worth the time.

I don't like the way it looks, I have the feeling the right menu is in the wrong place, but the general idea is great.

I think such a simple page with explenations and links to info is great for beginners.

To be honest, I think the whole website could do with a makeover but since I doubt Trel wants to change the forum skin then it will never happen.

Grey is getting boring after a while of time. I propose making a team and create a new template together. Changing the main colors won't be a bad idea. Let's see what Trel says.

The colourscheme has been discussed several times. What we have now is a perfect representation of lifelessness. Smile
However, I agree that the looks could be improved. But it is going to be lots of work, so we rather get the site in good shape first before trying anything big.

Could do with a new logo too, because it would be hard using other color schemes with that logo. Plus, it is quite random... how do rings have any connection to lifelesspeople?

Lifeless people are random? Rolling Eyes Silly
By the way, I'd rather stick with the current colourscheme.

Anyway, this thread is more about the coding and organisation aspects of the site, not the design. Smile
