Is there any good games for Linux? Or, is there any way to get some good games over to Linux? I'm running Ubuntu right now.

Native Linux games (not much here)

Steam games (I think, if not, it is great through WINE)
Unreal Tournament
America's Army (still supported?)
Nexuiz
http://techgage.com/print/top_10_free_linux_games
http://google.com/search?q=linux+native+games

Windows games on Linux

Wine, WineX, Cedega, Crossover

Try Wine first, install "wine" through synaptic package manager or from a terminal:
sudo aptitude install wine

The Wine Application Database lists test cases for most applications and games and often points to help on how to get the game working or improving the game.

Then you can try things like WineX or Cedega which are not free.

Another option which I just found about is PlayOnLinux, read a bit about it here:
Play Windows games on Linux with PlayOnLinux

Virtualisation

Running Windows inside Linux through something like VMWare and then running the games on that. Unlike WINE though, there is a significant performance drop here as virtualisation software does not focus on 3D graphics.

WineX is the predecessor of Cedega. CrossOver is focused on office applications. I've got to say that quite a few games work perfectly with the latest wine versions, and quite some games work perfectly with Cedega. (I've played GTA:SA and Need For Speed Carbon using Cedega)

VMware recently added experimental direct3D support. So this might actually work great in the future.

America's Army has not been supported on Linux for a while now. The only Linux game I enjoy is OpenTTD, although I hardly play any games on my computer. It's not exactly the best choice of operating system for playing games.

Shows what I know Very Happy (re: winex/crossover/america's army)

Scott, really? (re: OpenTTD) I couldn't stand it, reminded me of last decade, but then again, I used to play Age of Empires not long ago.

You could probably get some emulators to run under linux, and get some old Atari games. Silly those would go perfect with the entire linux feel. Very Happy Smile

here is a link that contains emulators that it says may work under linux

nope. Nothing posted recently here

I'm not really be sarcastic in the above posts of mine. Using linux will hold you back from alot of stuff. such as cool games, and even better applications. It's the truth. Of course you can use emulators to emulate windows games on linux, but its not the same and arent as powerful as they would be if you used them on windows itself.

if you want to play games i suggest atleast dual booting your linux with windows xp, so you can use linux for all your other stuff, and then windows to do real stuff on, such as games. Then you'll feel smart, and even be able to have some fun at the same time.

You keep complaining about people who like Linux and how they think they are so smart but they are actually dumb because they aren't using Windows like everyone else but you just go into Linux topics looking to start arguments.

Or not? how about you asked for any games that run under linux. I suggested the roms, if you don't like how it is then don't ask. All i'm saying is that most of if not all of the super good games run under windows.

That's fact, sorry if you don't like it, and there is no reason to start and argument over it whatsoever.

I'm not a gamer so I can't say much about what games run but I've heard alot of windows games will run better on linux because of better system resource management

Another game: Urban Terror

It is an online-only FPS that works for linux. It was originally a mod of Quake III but now it is a standalone game.

Alien Arena and Sauerbraten (sp?) are also good FPS games for linix. There are a ton of puzzle games in the repositories that can be quite addicting. If you want a RTS game then there is an excellent game called Warzone 2100. There are many others as well, just a little google will help you uncover many projects. There are also a couple of free MMORPG's for linux if you are into that.

Tux Racer is also a cool linux game Silly
But seriously, it's addicting. But quite a few of the older games have (unofficial) hacks so they work on linux. Also the opensource Warzone 2100 just isn't that good without the movies and music of the real game..

it's an opinion that there are barely any good games for linux? For linux itself?
uhh, well okay then. If that was true then this topic wouldn't of been created in the first place. Wink By the way, you're still the one being argumentative and hostile.

Urban Terror is an okay game. I recently downloaded it because one of my buddies who only uses linux told me about it. i believe it uses the first unreal engine, and the graphics arent that good. I played a few rounds with him, but i couldn't ever possibly pick that game over America's Army, or any of my other FPS. And also for some reason that game gives me motion sickness. Doom 1 and 2 did it, and also did duke nukman 64. dunno why Silly
