http://maps.live.com/

Has anyone here used "live maps"? in my opinion its much better than Google Earth. Why? Because the images are newer, well most of them, and the "birds eye" is flipping awesome.

Unless google's Street view, birds eye is taken by satellites (i believe) at an angle, and much closer and higher detailed than aerial view.

I found out about this a few months ago, the reason i didn't post it i have no idea, but its very awesome.

I am thinking the images you see right now are from winter - 06 - 2007. I've moved alot so i can kinda tell the time frame, ha which is funny. Maybe the images are newer/older in your area. Or maybe you don't get the Bird's eye view at all, but it is really sweet.

You can also rotate the view area in Bird's View. You can see the area from all angles which makes it even cooler.

If you goto www.virtualearth.com it'll also redirect to live maps.
I believe i created a topic a few years ago about how much msn's virtual earth sucked. The images were old as heck and in black and white. But man microsoft really fixed it up now.

I kinda wish that live had a program like google earth that you could download to explore the maps, but they don't. At least not yet and not that i know of. Instead they have a addon that you can download to get the maps in 3d, which is pretty cool.

Anyways you guys might want to check it out.

Both suck compared to Nasa Worldwind though.

SolidRaven, really? I got to have another look then. I neglected it after first look after Google Maps had much better imagery of my local area and surroundings.

And Scar, you do know about Google Earth right? You seem to be comparing Birds Eye to Street View which is in Google Maps instead of the 3D view available in the desktop app version. And Street View pics are taken by camera mounted vans.

Google map has really low resolution maps of the area where I live. Live maps has about the same detail. Worldwind has higher detail though.

I fond that some places on Google Earth have very good detail (like some airports where it shows the planes on the runway/cars etc) and other places that have very bad detail, then you get those in between where theres patches of good and patches of bad

Is there a special way to enable satellite imagery in World Wind? So far i only found the LandSat7 which is no were near high quality or even decent unless you're zoomed out. and USGS mode isn't even all that great. So unless there is another way to view image satellite imagery that i haven't found then I wouldn't really compare this two google earth or even Virtual Earth because they are almost two completely different programs.

World Wind seems more for scientific studies.

I mean look at the detail you can get with "Birds Eye" from live maps/virtual earth:
http://www.damnidunno.com/temp/sate.jpg
and then rotate it 360 degrees with the same quality
http://www.damnidunno.com/temp/sate2.jpg

I don't believe you can do that with Google Earth/Maps nor this world wind program.

Even the screenshots of the satellite imagery on their websites isnt even that great. Which is why i think that it serves a different purpose.

World Wind didn't work for me... Are you sure it has a good coverage of all places of the world? (I live in Greece). I was waiting for a long time, having zoomed in Greece and still it didn't add any more detail..

Live maps' definitely great, I can see the place I live in really high detail. xD

My place isn't shown in detail anywhere as far as I can tell. Guess it's all top secret Smile

World Wind is quite complex and isn't limited to what you see at first glance.

Guess what, be happy on maximum zoom of both I can't even see the streets in my area.

There are other more localized tools that allow that anyway. But those pictures were taken with a helicopter...

Please realize that both google earth and live maps are mainly aimed at american users, and of a lot of area's in europe only have low resolution images available on both of those. The only detailed maps they have are from locations where mainly tourists come.

There are a few places in Canada that just got Birds Eye view a few weeks ago. There were a couple of cities mentioned but the ones I remember were (I cant include them in this post. For some reason the server is picking them up as spam words or something? "Not Acceptable" errors suck).

I have to say I am fairly impressed. I typically use Google Maps for my day to day map lookups, including address searching and general messing about. But if I ever need a hi-res image to look at, I go to Live Maps because they seem to have newer images for my area.
