I'm in the Invention Club at my high school, well, because I love engineering and building things. Recently, we submitted an invention to Lemelson-MIT for a contest, and it won on the national level, which means we where 1 out of 20 high schools in the U.S. with winning inventions. All that means though, is we get a grant for X amoutn of money to actually build it. I am good at graphics, so I volunteered to make the logo for our team. I'd like some opinions and thoughts on this, so I can make it better. Also keep in mind that this is going on a sweatshirt that each team member will wear.

Note: This is to make sure the team likes the general idea of it. I will be fixing/modifying/adding more detail (especially to the hammer and screwdriver) if this basic piece is accepted.

The only problem I have when looking at it, is the background. Maybe it's the current trend to use lighter colors as backgrounds, but I think in this case, it really needs less contrast in the background. I'm guessing it might be a school color though. And, like you said, a little more detail with the tools.

Yeah, we decided on the sweatshirt being blue so I don't have much of a choice there. I'm definitely going to add more detail to the tools.

If only I had enough time/skill to make something like this. Silly

It's actually not that hard. That looks like they just used the cut-out filter in photoshop, and perhaps some hand refinements afterwards.

I know, but I like to do it by hand. Could you explain a little bit more about the cut-out filter and how to vector that way?

On second, hand, I don't think you could really get the detail shown in that picture with the cutout filter. It was probably done in illustrator by tracing objects as different shades. It was most likely posterized first (to four colors) to make tracing easier. Sorry for the confusion.

Our school colors are blue and gold, and the sweatshirt is going to be blue so there's nothing I can do about it. Silly I think it looks pretty nice, though. Why do you suggest I change it?

(Just trying to see from your point of view Silly)

There is no real consistency in the logo. First off, it uses 3 different fonts. Secondly the layout of the different logo elements is quite bad (looks like you placed the things where there was space without really thinking about it).
And finally, it is not clear what the 'main part' of the logo is (is it the graphic or the text that says AHS?).
If you keep these three things in mind, I am sure you will make a much better logo next time. Smile
Keep it up!

Having the same font throughout the logo does not seem like a good idea to me. I agree, the 2006-07 Winners looks out of place but on your other point, the Lemelson MIT text was going to go on the bottom anyway. The two crossed tools were supposed to compliment the text and be more in the background. I didn't just throw it in a random space. What made you think that?

I like the colors you used, though the grey doesn't really stand out against the blue background. Also, the hammer needs some shading on it, it just looks too flat.

As for the font, I think the AHS font looks good, but perhaps try and use the same font for 'Inventeam' and 'Lemelson MIT,' since the second one's font is hard to read.

For the spacing, I'd recommend moving the '2006-7 winners' text farther away from the 'inventeam' text, and closer to the corner. And lastly, try taking the text at the very bottom of the page, and putting it somewhere where it will balance out the logo.

Uh, that's just my opinion on it though. Hope it kinda helps. ^^'

If your going to be printing these on sweatshirts, you should work on keeping the number of colors to a pure minimum.

I think you should change the font so that all the text looks the same. Definatly change the 2006-07 winners font, it doesn't look good.
You also seem to have a lot of blank space, either fill it with something or make the image smaller
