Quote:
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- An exploding mobile phone battery apparently killed a South Korean man in the first such known case in this gadget-obsessed country, police say.

The man, identified only by his family name Suh, was found dead at his workplace in a quarry Wednesday morning and his mobile phone battery was melted in his shirt pocket, a police official in Cheongwon, 135 kilometers (85 miles) south of Seoul, told The Associated Press.

"We presume that the cell phone battery exploded," the police official said on condition of anonymity.

The official said the phone was made by South Korea's LG Electronics, the world's fifth-biggest handset maker.

LG Electronics confirmed its product was involved in the accident but said such a battery explosion and death was virtually impossible.

Cell phone or grenade that you bring with you all the time? I always put my cell phone in my pocket, Shocked fortunately mine is Nokia not LG.

Well-made Lithium Ion batteries are pretty much harmless. Too bad the production of Lithium Ion batteries is outsourced from Japan to countries with less stringent production values quite often...

That, and LG isn't even Japanese to begin with. I don't think I've read of a single Lithium Ion battery explosion where the battery was manufactured in Japan.

There was a case here in Israel several years ago, where the special forces used a cell phone to kill a terrorist leader this way. It was all over the papers for a while. They stuffed his phone with explosives, and when the guy tried to use it... KABOOM. Yep, mobile phones are deadly weapons, really.

I have a feeling that stuffing a guy's cell phone with explosives leads to an explosion for different reasons than a cell phone battery "exploding" (read: melting) due to manufacturing defects (read: unclean factories in the countries where battery manufacturing was outsourced to leading to little bits of metal entering the batteries, which in turn lead to arcing inside the battery, which reduces lifespan and increases temperature at rather dramatic rates).

Well, yes, it would seem so. The result is the same, though. Death by cell phone.

Update on this: http://news.wired.com/dynamic/.....9-10-20-09

Turns out it wasn't likely to be the phone that killed him anyhow.

The National Institute of Scientific Investigation said the injuries were too substantial to have been caused by a battery explosion, according to the Yonhap news agency.

"It is difficult to conclude that the damage of internal organs was caused by the cell phone battery explosion," Yonhap quoted an unnamed medical examiner as saying.

The official was not reachable for comment, but the institute told The Associated Press that it only had preliminary results from the autopsy and it will take about 15 days to reach a final conclusion.

On Wednesday, police and a doctor who examined the body said an explosion of the battery was probably responsible for the death. LG Electronics Inc., which made the handset, said a battery explosion was almost impossible.

They said 15 days were need for a final conclusion. But as I can see, they could not believe that severe injury, or death-wound, was caused by the battery explosion, just because it is a battery explosion but not something like battery+stuff inside.

Even the final report comes out that the weapon is the battery, it is still very hard to believe, I take my cell phone all the time and I don't want to die like that.

Have the police suspected foul play? I mean I don't think mobile phone batteries are liable to explode. I have heard of car batteries exploding but only under exceptional circumstances and they can be rigged but a spontaneously exploding phone battery is just bizzare.

I do feel sorry for the man and his family because fo this unfortuate accident but I'm not going to let this put me off using my phone. I suppose there will be an inquiry or at least I hope so. Even if its just one man involved an investigation is need if only to calm the customer's anxieties.

I have heard of this news of the television but I didn't watch.

Before suspecting the phone and foul play, why not suspect if the person used unapproved batteries?

They reported that the phone was made by LG, but they did not specify if the battery was made by LG or not.

Some people tend to go for cheap alternatives by getting unapproved batteries.

Drawing a huge amount of power out of a battery in a matter of seconds can cause a heat build up that can lead to formation of gas and either the battery stops working (in most cases) or it explodes. Though car batteries can handle that fairly well for a short time.

A phone explosion is powerful enough to kill a man eh? I just heard about nokia phones with certain batteries manufactured over a certain period of time were exploding. Everyone were busy changing their batteries at that time. I even remember seeing a picture on the net in which a man's pillows, bed were destroyed and his hand was injured because of some nokia phone exploding.

Eek, that's a bit freaky. Especially since my phone's an LG and has a bad tendency to heat up beyond normal levels on long conversations. I kind of doubt my phone would explode, but I think I'll still get it checked out.

I suppose it is likely to have a phone battery explode as anything could happen, but I wonder if they were ever able to have that conclusive finding on whether or not that was what had caused his death. Still I would imagine anytime that you have any kind of technology with you whether it be a phone, an IPOD or really anything else, it could be possible, but not probably for the battery to malfunction. It is an unfortunate situation for the man and his family, but perhaps it was just a faulty battery or something else going on. You never really know. Still if it was a battery exploding that caused the man's death that is a very scary thought to take in. I keep my phone in my pocket a lot of the time too, not near my chest, but still it would be really horrifying to think of my phone exploding and causing any kind of damage.

I doubt the mobile batteries can give such an explosion that will kill someone. I thought the electromagnetic waves generated by the mobile are more harmful.
