Mass Effect looks like a really awesome game, but it's only for Xbox 360 (I'm a PC gamer). Anyone played it? Is it really as good as it looks? I may just buy an Xbox so I can play this game.

Never heard of it. What kind of game are we talking about here?

It's an action role-playing sci-fi game. While it has a lot of aspects of role-playing (building skills, going on quests, choosing your own path, etc.), the combat isn't necessarily turn-based like a lot of other RPGs. You can apparently pause the action to give your team orders.

Wikipedia can probably explain in more depth than I can. I think it looks good for the story and because of how open it is. The graphics also look really nice, but that's probably because it's for the Xbox 360, so it doesn't need to skimp.

I've been seeing commercials for it all over the place, so I thought it was fairly well-known.

My roomate's really into it. That's all I can really say. It looks like it could possibly be fun... not sure, though.

He's an avid gamer of many genres and claims it's one of the best games he's ever played or seen. So that might say something about it, I suppose.

That does sound like fun. RPG is my favorite kind of game, after all. Too bad Wikipedia doesn't offer any screencaps, 'cause cover art usually doesn't represent the game graphics too well. Though I googled for it and the game appears to be rather spiffy from inside.

Mass Effect is one of the few recent RPGs that is actually fun to play, instead of being a labor.

While the game is short, it has a lot of replay value, it's snarky in a funny kind of way, and the story is really enjoyable.

If you are/were a fan of the KOTOR series or Jade Empire, you'll go gaga over Mass Effect.

Now, that said, don't expect anything new or revolutionary. It's not a trend setting, or trend breaking game. It's an RPG that takes elements of action and adventure, and puts them together "the right way." In other words, it's just a really well produced game.

The game looks pretty good, but I wouldn't get a system just for one game. I don't know Xbox 360 well, but I would assume there is a nice selection of games for it.

I will say that the game seems absurdly expansive. Not only do you travel between planets, you travel outside of the solar system into other systems with their own star and planets across the entire galaxy.

Seems that RPGers would like that concept, I think.

Bioware has an extensive history of porting their games over to the PC within 2 years time. It might be worth the wait, but by then, the games out will be "bigger and better."

I played KotOR and liked it a lot, which is why I think this looks pretty good. Anyways, I heard that BioWare has no plans to port this to the PC. There are rumors that they might, but their official stance is to leave this Xbox 360 only.

Which is too bad Sad Bioware has always spoiled PC Gamers (Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, KotOR,...). They did port Jade Empire (Xbox) and I'm hoping that they'll give Mass Effect the same treatment Smile .

I'd say out of the 3 consoles on the market right now, the Xbox 360 by far has the biggest number of hit titles that have hit the high scores on meta critic.

In general it's the system to get for all-round gaming fun. The Wii is more for the Nintendo first party titles and the occasional odd party game, and the PS3 is more for the typical Japanese RPG games that the PSX line is known for (and also known for the lack of genres like FPS). The 360 seems to draw from everyone's territory so it makes it the best deal, and the price is set as if they knew that: right in the middle.

I haven't played Mass Effect yet, but I hear it's getting great reviews. I'm not a big RPG fan myself, so who knows when I'll give it a try. But it does sound interesting.

Agreed.

I am playing Mass Effect now and it is very good! Do not expect FPS style combat from the shooter aspect of this game. It is still an RPG and in fact, the action is very tactical. Controlling yours and your team mates's abilities and skills is key to winning every battle.

Some tips if you plan on playing: make sure you remember to level up! Keep your characters equipped with the best equipment and upgrades.

The game itself doesn't explain very much of any of this. It just puts everything there for you to use.

The story is very entertaining thus far! The game is very open! And the decisions... you'll be making a lot. Everything your character says, every action he/she takes, is up to you. And I just completed a section where I was faced with a tough decision (if you're able to get into the game that is, and feel like you're Shepard).

Woot!
