|

Does anyone ever get those annoying news letter random emails from Microsoft (says msn) and ever read them? Well don't!
I read one last week that said something about a free computer or something, so clicked it to read it and clicked another thing. Never once did i agree to get emails from anyone, and when i noticed that it was one of those spam trick emails, i x'd out the window.
Ever since then I have been getting spam emails non spot. I already blocked like 10+ domains (ms's spam filter) and it doesn't seem to catch any.
It reminds me of why i quit using hotmail years ago. it's because they allow people to spam their members. i guess they get money for it? And there is no way to stop it since hotmail doesn't allow you to use any third party email clients, so you cant use another spam filter (or can you? i use windows mail desktop, reply if you can :p )and its annoying.
Why do they do this anyways? why do they want people to not use their services? why are they so greedy?
I only started using hotmail again because i got a really short 5 letter word @live.com address, which i cant just pass up since its that good and easy to remember, but its really making me want to go back to gmail because i never got any spam there and if i did it was automatically placed into the spam folder.
I suppose its my fault for clicking the email, but it was from MSN / Windows Live hotmail! I never once would think that a company would make it so easy for lame *** companies to spam their members! (i say lame because why would any decent company want to spam anyone? it doesn't attract people to their business).
Has anyone ever did this and got the spam?
I remember years ago like in 2000 when i used hotmail i'd get spam all the time on my private accounts which never even been entered into any commercial public site, so they're doing something fishy. _________________

I doubt it was actually from them, it sounds more like a phishing email.
Just don't use hotmail, no matter how great of an email you get, Microsoft always does little sneaky things to make a quick buck, such as tagging little ads onto your emails when you send them. _________________ TutorialToday |

well the spam emails arent from them, but the email that asked me to sign up for the crap was. It was one of the ones they send every week or month offering crap.
the email was from one of their actual domains as many of them are, and either way i think they have a feature where people cant send phishing emails with their service, at least not once that they say are from hotmail, msn, microsoft.
I always get these in all of my accounts. This was jsut one of the random times i decided to actually read one. _________________

Yeah I don't usually open anything from Microsoft except for the ones that come from ones I specifically recall signing up for like MSDN emails and stuff.
I too feel like their spam filter does nothing to stop emails from coming through. Every day I get a few emails, and almost every one of them is spam. I hit "report spam" and there never seems to be an end to the flow of spam I get.
But I can't tell if it's simply because my account is the oldest email account I have, or if its because their filter sucks. My other emails at other services don't get nearly as much spam. _________________ Come visit Shattered Abstracts! (Photoblog!) |

When spam is sent out, the sender "believes" it is a used email address. Now when you click on links in that email, it tells the spammer that it "is" a used email address. _________________ God doesn't exist but I do |

Hotmail still wouldn't allow peopel to send emails as them to users on their service. They are smart enough to catch it. Or everyone would be doing it. Go ahead and try.
Anyways I'm still getting mroe and more spam everyday. Never click on them dang emails from MS!
it's funny in a way because I just checked the spam filter setting sin Windows Live Mail, and it says its on high. BUt so far it has caught ZERO spam emails. I have to block every email i get, and it still doesn't catch the next ones. WHat sort of crap is that?
I am thinking about going back to gmail, but i really like my short @ live.com addy gmail email logins are so dang long. my hotmail is only 5 chars
But im so sick of this spam that will not stop. _________________

It is not hard at all to spoof an email address. I used to send weird emails to people I know from places like the whitehouse and other big organizations. _________________ God doesn't exist but I do |

I get very little on my hotmail account, if any. Also, most of the spam emails I get aren't actually spam (but things I've signed up for legitimately).
I doubt that the original email was from Microsoft. Why would send anything about a free computer?
Also, Gmail addresses aren't that long, are they? :s .com? Compared to hotmail.com or live.com? One extra letter? Or are you talking about the actual name. In which case the shortest name is 6 letters (which, ironically, I think is to help spam prevention).
But yeah, I don't think its anything Microsoft connected which caused you to be spammed. |

No such nonsense on my Gmail account, although my Gmail ID isn't my usual Internet ID, and the address is nothing special, but at least I am spam-free.
It has been around a year since I created the current email account, and I have not received any spam so far. Messages that went to the Spam folder were not counted, since they were not spam and I moved it back to the Inbox. _________________

Yeah my gmail accounts are still almost completely spam free (besides the automatically detected spam thats in the spam folder, that we never notice anyways), but i do get maybe one spam delivered to my gmail inbox once a month at least. sometimes not even that though.
I keep adding the @domain.com's to my hotmail/windows mail blocked list, and yet they still keep coming. more and more everyday. Getting really annoying. _________________

Just switch email address and be careful with it, hotmail accounts are easy targets as there is so many that bots brute force through account names and the address is available in plain text in places where you register and give the info, such as profiles on this forum and most other forums.
That probably ends up being less hassle than dealing with the spam. Another option is to use a desktop based email client to access your hotmail (a tricky process itself) and then apply spam filters or use common ones that do a great job, at least with one of my old accounts which I check every now and then in case someone only had that email as a point of contact for me. _________________

Since I have switched to a new email address last year, I have been taking great caution with where I am using my email address.
For example, if I want to register at a site, which looks dubious to me, I would use a separate account first. If everything goes fine, I would either change my email address, or register a new account with my real email address.
That's the reason why till now I have not received any spam, and the reason why I do this is because I did not take caution when I was on my previous email account. I would receive approximately 300 spam mails per day on my previous account. _________________

I gave up with using my hotmail email address for actual emails a while ago, i only use it for msn messenger now. My new address doesn't get any spam, probably becuase only my friends know about it. I only use it for msn, never actual emails or signing up to anything online _________________ Midnight Tempest - A Sailor Moon TCG

Get a email provider that you like and trust. For me, I use Gmail, which has a friendly and eye-candy interface.
Sign up for a .NET Passport (now known as a Windows Live ID) with your email account. So for me, I will sign up for a Windows Live ID and state my Gmail address.
Once you have confirmed your email address, others can add your email address immediately.
The advantage of this is you don't need to put up with Microsoft's nonsense just to use their Windows Live Messenger.
And Microsoft does not send any nonsense to your email address. _________________
