Does anyone know how to do this? I've googled all over the place and really cant get this damn thing to work.
I have a linksys cable/dsl router and it also allows you to have like a home network where you can get files off another pc its hooked up to. However, i do not know how to do this. I've tried many times and nothing worked.
The PC down stairs has windows XP pro on it, mine up here has Vista home basic. so it's kinda tricky i guess. I know that it can be down.
Can someone please provide me with some type of step by step instructions? I am semi-retarded after all and probably need a picture drawn for me.

Follow these step, see if it works or not.
Simply starting your web browser and jumping into the configuration.
Once your web browser is open, go to the URL http://192.168.1.1/
This will take you to a popup box which asks you to enter a username and password.
The username is either blank or "admin" and the default password is "admin".
Once you are past the login screen, you are able to access (and change) a plethora of configuration options for your router. |

| XP/Vista file sharing should be easy. Make sure the computers are in the same workgroup and "file and printer sharing" is enabled. Both can be done through the Network Setup Wizard in XP's control panel, not sure how to do these in Vista. Then restart the two computers, disable the firewalls, and try access the other computer by hostname and if that doesn't work, try by IP, e.g. \\192.168.1.101 in explorer. If it works, enable your firewalls and put the computers on the network in the trusted zone or allow incoming/outgoing traffic to 192.168.1.* (you can be more specific and only allow file sharing ports etc.). |

You shouldn't have to change any DEFAULT settings on your router.
Run the NETWORK SETUP WIZARD in Control Panel on both computers, making sure you pick same options for both.
Reboot both computers and all should be fine. _________________ God doesn't exist but I do |

| one thing that has not been noted is the default workgroup names for Vista and XP are different. XP uses MSHOME, Vista uses WORKGROUP. You will have to change this on one of the two pcs. There is more issues you will have to deal with for file sharing between them as Vista and XP don't talk well. However, I don't have that info on me right now. I was working on the same issue with my wireless network at home. I can see my vista and see my xp, but they cannot access each other's files. |

| Quote: | Alright, here's the step by step instruction.
1) First you need to confirm that you have enabled file and printer sharing on network card. Go to Start and right click on Network and then click Properties.
2) Network and Sharing Center window will appear, then click Manage network connections on the left panel.
3) Network Connections window will appear. Here you can right click on the network card that you are using now and click Properties.
4) Your network connection card’s properties window will appear, then click File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, finally click OK.
5) Now go back to Network and Sharing Center window, check the network location type of your computer. I would advise you to use Private network since you are using file sharing in home network.
Note: Also I would advise you to set the same Workgroup name for all computers in the same network.
6) After that scroll down to the Sharing and Discovery section, turn on file sharing and also turn off password protected sharing. Click Apply to make changes, finally click OK to close all windows.
7) Lets move to do folder/file sharing now. Go to the folder that contains the files you would like to share, right click that folder and click on Share…
Note: You can also do simple file sharing if you right click the folder and click Properties. I will tell you more about this advanced file sharing later.
8 ) File Sharing window will appear. Since you have password protected sharing disabled, select the Guest or Everyone (All users in this list) account and click Add. In this case, I added user Guest and then set the user permission. Finally click Share to do sharing.
Note: For setting file permissions, you can have these 3 selection, choose the one that you need:
Reader – Can only view or read files in the shared folder.
Contributor - Permit the person or group to view all files, add files, and change or delete the files that they add.
Co-owner - Permit the person or group to view, change, add, and delete files in the shared folder.
Note: Only enable file sharing with read, modify and write permission if you really need to. If not, Read only permission is enough.
9) The next window will tell you that your folder is shared, click Done to close the window.
10) After that when you check on the shared folder, you will notice there are 2 people on the bottom of folder. Finally, you can then access this shared folder from Vista, XP or other Windows OS without user authentication. That's all the simple file sharing enabling process.
Note1: In some cases, you will be prompted to provide a username and password even this is just simple file sharing. You should type the name guest with no password to access the shared folder.
Note2: Please right click that shared folder and click on Properties, then go to Sharing tab. Check the group or user names that are allowed to access this folder, and make sure the user/group that you allowed to access during sharing process is listed here as well (usually will be added automatically when you do folder sharing), if not click Edit to add those missing user/group. Please note Everyone will allow everybody to access this folder.
If the specific user/group you allowed during sharing process does not match the user/group listed here, the missing user might not be able to see that shared folder at all! Or the user will get prompt saying that you might not have permission to use this network resource when try to access this shared folder from other computer.
Try and test some different settings, then you will know which one will work.

I have a Linksys router.
The default username is blank and the default password is 'admin'.
You don't really need to configure so many things.
The workgroup may be a problem.
Because I am on XP, I will tell you a solution that may work.
Right-click My Computer and select "Map Network Drive...".
You will see a "Drive" field and a "Folder" field. Select a drive letter that is not in used. If you are on XP, just select the WORKGROUP folder (to browse your Vista files) and see if your Vista computer is listed or not.

Well, i got the networks to show up when i click on the "networks" in Windows Explorer. So they are being detected, they just wont' let me access them.
Here is the error i get. I named the other pc in the house "moms", sine my mom is basically the only one that ever uses it.

It's being detected so thats good, but i don't understand why it won't let me access it. _________________ http://www.damnidunno.com | http://www.mjhq.net | http://www.SnapCite.com |
