I'll believe it when I see the benchmarks. The last test I saw like this was badaboom vs x264 and the CPU based encoder (x264) won.

x264 is quite efficient, now if somebody would rewrite it to use the graphics card to do the calculations it'd be pretty damn fast and most likely beat any other encoder out there.

I highly doubt we'll see that anytime soon with CUDA or ATI's version of CUDA.

I doubt we'll see much in the way of open source (such as x264) support for it until we see something like OpenCL which allows support for all the cards with a bit more sanity baked in than CUDA.
