You don't really need WinRAR if you have this, by the way.

Or you download WinRAR, and then you don't need 7-Zip since WinRAR (as far as I know) can unzip the same things.

I personally don't like Windows Defender. It came on my laptop and is always annoying me.

For me, none of that is interesting in the least. Especially the Google Toolbar. Since I always set Google as my homepage anyways. Silly

As PDF reader you better use Foxit Reader. It uses less memory and works just fine.

It's not very memory efficient but it can convert pretty any video or audio file to the most common formats.

Holy hell. The later of the two is genius! That is going on my computer!

Why would you need VLC and Media Player Classic?

VLC doesn't seem to like my dual-display setup. It renders black when shown on my HDTV displays; even after messing with various settings. MPC doesn't seem to have this problem. Also, as hard as it may seem to believe it, there is certain video file types/codecs that will just not render properly in VLC, but will in MPC; at least for me.

Also add these things to the list:

Opera
Safari (Windows)
Xfire
Winrar
Fraps
SUPER

That doesn't seem to be much support for downloading VLC at all. Media Player Classic for the win! Very Happy

The WinRAR archiver is shareware, a trial version that you will need to pay for when it expires.

WinRAR as far as I can tell does not expire. I have used it for years before I had to format and the only thing that happens is there has always been a dialog box when it opens saying "blah blah blah" press continue kind of thing.

I remember the popup, but I thought it also expired after a while. Perhaps that's only the ability to compress to RAR, though.
Anyway, 7-zip doesn't even have a popup, so that's still an advantage.

From my experience it is probably best to have both on your computer. A lot of times, some videos that you may acquire would be encoded in all sorts of different codecs. Instead of trying to figure out which codec(s) you would need and then downloading various all-in one codec packages that bog down your computer, I've found that VLC will play just about everything out there WITHOUT having to download additional codecs. I think it can even play dvd movies that have been bin'd up as image file.

As someone mentioned, there are some files that media Player classic will play better without additional codecs. Also the only other files that it won't play well are the rm / rmv files. Other than that, VLC gets my choice as Primary video player.

Also, I like Opera much better than either firefox or internet explorer. It has all that I need in a browser and I don't have to bother about finding/hunting for all the different plugins for firefox.

You still have access to all of WinRAR's features after the trial period has "ended". On this installation, I've still got one more day before WinRAR expires, but, if I recall correctly, the pop-up eventually stops appearing or doesn't appear all of the time or something along those lines.

After downloading the Combined Community Codec Pack (which doesn't take up that much space at all), I dare you to find a media file that isn't QuickTime or RealMedia that Media Player Classic cannot play.

That's because VLC comes with its own codec pack. I just checked out how much diskspace VLC and Combined Community Codec Pack (it comes with Media Player Classic) use, and VLC uses about double the diskspace. It really bogs down my computer. As for playing images of DVDs, great, the VLC developers support movie pirating. Why else would someone have an ISO of a movie?

They play just fine after downloading RealAlternative, in fact, I think RealAlternative comes with Media Player Classic if you don't already have it.

I prefer playing my DVD's from ISO. They are easy to store so I have a copy to make sure I can back them up if my DVD get ruined, and they run faster then playing from my DVD drive. So it's not all about the piracy.

How about homemade movies that you edit in some movie editing software, export to .ISO, then burn to a disk? This way you have both a disk copy and an electronic copy. Or you could back-up previously created home movies and save them as ISOs on your computer. So nice job generalizing Wink

I use VLC and haven't felt any performance or rendering issues. I don't have any problems with VLC showing black on one screen or another while going dual screen (say like when hooking up my laptop to a TV).

patman3d: I love Opera too. Nothing can beat having the native mouse gestures. And despite what other people say, I think the interface is rather elegant, especially when compared to the default of Firefox (and face it, most community made themes aren't that great for Firefox).
