I just Office 2007 about a week or two ago and I have to say that I like concept of the new interface a lot. Its really neat having all the functions right there in front of you to use, and I like how they are all organized.

What I am not liking about it is the customization options for the Ribbon (as Microsoft is calling it). I notice that I use several functions from one tab quite often, one from another tab quite often, and maybe 2 or three scattered across other tabs a lot. It would be nice to be able to create a custom tab where I could put all those functions together.

Apparently there is a way to use XML and some unspecified programming language that you can use to create custom tabs, I am looking into that right now. It sounds like it would be a lot of work for a little profit though.

Has anybody had the chance to use or get office 2007 yet? What do you think of the new interface?

I've had Office 2007 for about a year. It took me a little while to get used to the interface, and to find all the things that I regularly used (page numbers, for some reason, were a bit of a struggle for me).

I do like it though, I like the live previews of the font particularly, and I think it's fairly easy to use - once you get used to it.

I've not heard anything about creating custom tabs, but I do imagine that it'd be quite useful.

As a kinda aside, for university students in Canada, the US and Australia (as well as other places I'm assuming) can get Office 2007 Ultimate edition (recommended retail = a lot) for very cheap. I think its US$60, C$64 and A$75. Compared to retail prices of over $400 (and over $600 for Australians I think).

Quite a good deal if you want to check it out. (and finally something for the people who say that they only pirate the stuff cos it's too expensive Silly)

That deal you talk about is called "The Ultimate Steal." Well I figured why stop at taking 85% off... I'm a college student, I don't have $60 laying around, and if I did I would spend it on more useful stuff Wink

I looked further into creating custom tabs, and it appears that custom tabs are only for using external programs to interact with Office. For example, if you have Adobe Acrobat 8 Pro, then you get a tab in Office with various controls regarding PDF format, and it allows you to export directly to PDF from Office. Not a bad feature for software developers, but useless for creating custom tabs with Office functions.

The live font preview (as well as the live previews for other stuff, such as design templates in PowerPoint) are nice, but they slow down my system quite a bit when using it. I suppose that is my fault for having low specs and running Office, Thunderbird, Firefox, iTunes, Pidgin, Photoshop, Illustrator, and a few other programs at the same time Very Happy

My college were advertising the Ultimate Steal not that long ago but i never decided to do it. College uses Office XP and so do i so there isn't really any reason to change it.

I like the look and feel of 07, but my only issue is the tabs where I have to switch a lot to use certain different things.

More features, more efficiency and more screwing over of other Office suites. What else could it be?

It's not all bad though, there are plugins and conversion tools, sometimes even built in, that handle the new file formats.

I'm surprised there is hardly a warning when you go to save them though. I foresee many people learning the hard way as soon as their teacher, fellow student or colleague, managers etc. cannot open their files and then have to work out how to and remember to save files in compatibility mode.

It's also Microsoft's version of the "Open Document" push. Sadly the only thing "open" about it is that only 2007 clients can open those files. Smile

I agree with everyone regarding the look and feel of 2007. If Microsoft knows how to do one thing right, it's design a decent GUI (with the exception of BOB). I'm a big fan of the meatball file explorer. It removes a lot of the redundancy found in typical file menus.

I don't really think there's stuff that's more useful than Office which you more than likely use for many, if not all of your assignments and things Silly Not sure I agree with your logic, $60 is awfully cheap for software of that quality. You probably wouldn't think twice about spending that much on a game or going to a couple of movies or something.

uhh.. bad example Silly But perhaps something else like a few beers or something Silly

Although I'm not claiming to be all high and mighty about this software piracy thing Silly It's definitely a good price though, that you should probably take advantage of.

And in Australia it's called "It's Not Cheating."

And people using older versions of Microsoft Office (well, at least 2003), can download the compatability pack for opening the docx format.

I only need Office for one class, and that is because the professor specifically said "I only want .docx files turned in." (We submit assignments electronically. As you can imagine, more than a few students were disgruntled that they are being forced to upgrade to 2007.) I'm all for open office, I love that suite, but the last I checked it out (before Christmas break) it couldn't handle .docx files, and support for .doc files was patchy if you used some of the more advanced features of Word.

And I don't play video games, haven't been to a movie since Christmas break (and my parents paid for it Silly went with them), I don't drink. The only things I really spend money on is tuition, rooming, and food. I'm a boring person Silly

Not that I am condoning piracy, because I can't do that on this forum or on my website hosted by LLP Very Happy

But honestly the way I see piracy is that it is more of a statement than actually getting the product. Its kind of saying "I don't want to pay your price, or I don't support your business model, but unfortunately because of your market share/monopoly I need this product." Its exactly the same as the music industry right now. A lot of music that I listen to is released under the Creative Commons license because I support that distribution method (not to mention it is quite good too), but I also have music that is owned by the RIAA and co. because that is what is other people listen to and request me to play. I hear a lot of people complaining about how downhill mainstream music has gone in the last 20 years, and yet everybody still listens to it and buys/steals it... but this is getting off topic now.

The Ultimate Steal FTW!

Otherwise, I wouldn't have bought it. Wink

My mother, the ultimate usability testing person, has the trial version on her new laptop, but she doesn't like it. She even sort of begged me to install OpenOffice.org as soon as possible. Smile

I have it on my laptop activated but I don't use it. Silly

In fact I hard use Microsoft Office, both 2003 and 2007.

I use Notepad to take down notes, and WordPad if needed to print the document.

Office 2007 has a lot of useless features and the useful features are hidden. Also it sucks to make graphs in excel 2007. You're better of using a program like Origin for that or custom graph plugins.
