Why get a mac if you can build a far superior workstation and install the mac osX?
i don't have any desire to own a mac to be honest or anything that runs osX but I find no reason to buy something just because it has an apple icon on it. |

Because unless things have magically gotten wonderfully advanced since I last tried OS X on a PC, it's just not the same. Sure you might have more CPU power for cheaper, but it just seemed sluggish and not right... Some hardware won't even work because OS X isn't designed to accommodate for a variety of hardware configurations.
Regardless, if you're gonna install it on a desktop then maybe it's worth it. But it would take a lot more to convince me that a PC laptop is better than a mac laptop. I'm no fanboy, but I've never seen any PC laptop that has the feel of a mac laptop, running OS X or Windows. _________________ Come visit Shattered Abstracts! (Photoblog!) |

Hate to be the one to say this... but if you simply want the OS X operating system (mcwkm's scenario) then why wouldn't you build a superior workstation and install linux, then theme it to look like a Mac
Mac OS X is based off of Unix, Linux is based off of Unix. Its like you are getting the same operating system...
Sure, you are going to miss out on things like the iLife suite and native Photoshop support, but I don't really need any of those programs
As for laptops, assuming that the Mac laptop works fine (I have heard of Mac laptops having issues with hardware, such as overheating), you are right. Mac laptops, from what I have seen, are amazing little powerhouses on their own. And not terribly priced for what you get either. _________________ Rashy! |

There are several sites like: http://www.red-sweater.com/blo.....complaints
Ontop of that all apple products are overpriced for what you get. A regular laptop is a lot cheaper and in most cases comes with a lot more for the same price. You pay for the apple logo, not for the hardware... _________________

| Actually, the Macbooks are pretty reasonably priced. Especially if you get them with a student discount. However, once you get to the Macbook Pros, the price suddenly becomes far too much. |

That argument used to be true, perhaps, but not anymore. My Macbook was not what I would call "expensive" when compared spec by spec to a brand name PC laptop. All electronics have issues, but fact of the matter is AppleCare took "care" (see what I did there?) of any issues I brought up about my laptop. My only other laptop experience is with IBM, and it was quite possibly the worst support experience I have ever dealt with.
Regardless, Macs are no longer what one can call expensive if they're going to go and spend more than $1500+ on a PC anyways. _________________ Come visit Shattered Abstracts! (Photoblog!) |

Apple laptops I would say are competitive with other markets but i still believe their desktop and workstation prices are still quite high.
As for your experience with IBM, I just got a new hard drive overnighted for free because mine failed. I believe it is very nice from my experiences. The laptop is a lenovo thinkpad but IBM handled the support. |

Everyone has their own experiences, I suppose. I had to deal with IBM when they made their own laptops, and contracted everything to third parties... including support.
When I talk about Mac prices, I'm usually talking about laptops anyways because I don't really believe in buying desktops anymore. If you're getting a desktop, you should build it yourself. If you're buying something pre-built, it's likely a laptop. I know this doesn't go with everybody, but it does with me.
I've always viewed OS X as a laptop operating system anyways. It's just quick, smooth, and simplistic. Having it on a desktop would actually kind of make me feel a little empty, believe it or not. That said, I don't use desktops anymore. _________________ Come visit Shattered Abstracts! (Photoblog!) |

(I tried to make this post a few weeks ago but I kept getting a "Not Acceptable" error).
Mac laptops do have the occasional problem here or there, but the good thing is that AppleCare treats the issues handsomely. The benefit is that you can take it directly to them (provided you live near an Apple Store) and show them the problems for yourself, for free. Then they take it from you and tell you to come back in a day or two and all is better.
I've only had to do that once before, and it was because my dvd drive wasn't working properly. While diagnosing the dvd drive, he noticed my battery capacity was half of what it used to be a year ago, so he replaced that for free as well. Top notch. _________________ Come visit Shattered Abstracts! (Photoblog!) |
