Man sleeps on tracks, wakes up without arm
Posted on Thu, Mar. 06, 2008

BY DAVID OVALLE AND TIM CHAPMAN

A train severed the arm of a man, likely drunk and homeless, who fell asleep with his arm stretched out on the tracks Thursday morning, Miami police said.

The man was asleep on the tracks at 7230 NE Miami Ct. when the train went by about 7:30 a.m.

''When the train came through, it completely severed his arm,'' said Miami police spokesman Napier Velasquez. ``Doctors are trying to reattach his arm.''

The man was found by Miami Fire Rescue leaning against a building. He was not cooperative and would not provide his name, said Lt. Ignatius Carroll, fire rescue spokesman.

He was sent to Jackson Memorial Hospital along with his severed right arm, which was packaged in a plastic bag.

I see, I need a safe place to lay myself down after get drunk.

I always wake up in my own bed and have no idea how I came back home and slept after drinking. And the only way to find out what had happened last night is to call my friends and ask them.

But there is always a question that bothered me, if I had done something stupid that night?

Ok that is just scary to think of that happening, but I have heard stories where people have placed pennies on train tracks and when the train rolled by they pennies have flown off and killed people with the velocity and speed behind the penny flying off of the track. Sadly the man was probably far too drunk to realize where he was around the time he passed out. He is lucky that he did not wind up getting more than an arm severed at that point and the fact that they were taking him to reattach it leads me to see that he must have been luckier than some would have been in that position as I couldn't imagine an arm still being in tact. Plus they must have found him shortly after the accident if they were able to ice everything. Sadly I have seen stories about students up at the college I go winding up passing out on the train tracks and dying because of something like this. The man is lucky in his own way that he didn't end up losing his life instead of his arm. Of course I would imagine he probably did not feel very lucky as he saw that his arm was missing, but that is another story. Thanks for the read.

I go to a college with a tracks nearby, and it seems like there is always a train passing by. I haven't heard of anyone passing out on train tracks after drinking until now, but then it sounds like it kind of happens at least every once in a while from what coralvalley says. Now that makes me wonder if people from my school in the past have done that, but I haven't heard of any such cases.

When my friends go drink, usually they bring me along to take care of them. Generally the rule is if they are drunk, they don't leave the room/apartment/house until the next day when they sober up a bit. So remember to bring a DD or just somebody to make sure you don't do anything stupid when you drink Wink

Yeah that would definitely suck... But why be uncooperative with the authorities when you're missing an arm? They're going to be the only ones that can get you the help you need to save your arm. Some people.....

I agree with Rashy though. Usually when my friends are drinking I'm the DD, or I'm generally the one that never can seem to get as drunk as they do so I tend to be the one to look out for them. But they're smart enough to deal with things themselves, most of the time. Nobody in my group of friends drinks and drives, that's for sure, and there's usually always more than one person who isn't drinking so nobody goes off and gets lost on railroad tracks. Silly

"Oh, train tracks. That's just what I want to sleep on. The tracks poking me is so much more comfortable than lying on something flat."

I have never gotten myself drunk or passed out. I always thought its important for one to his limits when come to drinking. Besides the safety concerns, you can get yourself into serious troubles if you get yourself drunk and do not know what the hell is going on.

I completely agree with you. I drink occasionally after I pass an exam or something really great happens, just to celebrate. But I only have 1 or 2. Never any more than that.

I wonder if the man really felt pain, considering how drunk he must have been.

To be honest, if the train ran straight over his arm, I doubt he would have felt very much at all!

The thought is quite horrific though...... A couple of hundred tons of metal going straight over the arm.... *Pukes*

It is a wonder that he didn't bleed to death while sleeping!

Haha I guess the speed of the train was so much that it cut and melded together his arm to stop the bleeding at the same time! Wink
