Warm weather is approaching....to me that means I finally get to take my quad out for some fun.
I tried taking it out in the snow, was fun for a whole 5 minutes until I started losing feeling of body parts. Couldn't pop any wheelies with the lack of traction. Took it for a spin down street, got up to around 60mph and had to let off gas...too hard to control in snow going that fast.
But now the snow is melting, the sun is out and I'm all too eager to ride. Next weekend I hope I find time to change fluids and filter...and if I can talk the wife into it...maybe buy a couple upgrades for some more horsepower.
Last summer I had a starter quad (2000 Yamaha Warrior 350) and ended up crashing it into a tree. That was a BIG ouch. Bent the hell out of frame and busted myself up pretty good too. That accident took me off my feet for about a month. In the time I was "resting" I found my next quad. I ended up getting a new 07 Yamaha Raptor 700r.
I love this raptor, the thing flies. All I have done to it so far is a I removed the baffle, airbox lid and added a EFI controller. I can lift the fronts off the ground anytime I want, so much torque. Top speed isn't bad either, they go 80-90mph stock. I changed my front gear from a 15 tooth to a 16 tooth which made my 1st gear useful again!!!
This year I hope to race it. I raced a Banshee last year right after getting it, I was in the lead until I missed next gear. I raced that same banshee again while it was racing a yzf450. They were racing each other and I was behind them. They took off, I gave them a second then I started. Caught them both and would have passed them if there wasn't a turn right ahead. Now that I am used to the quad now, I have some good expectations of what I am going to smoke this year.
Do you own a quad? If you do, what do you have. Have you raced it? If yes, what did you lose/win to. Have you raced a Raptor 700?
I am debating on leaving my ITE Mudlites on until the ground dries up some. But they suck up torque, especially with that 16 tooth front gear. I like the stock tires more, but I will soon need to replace them...any suggestions? My banshee buddy has razor 2's on his ride, they look like they have way too much traction. All that torque and tires that grip everything are not a great combo, I have hard enough time already keeping the front end down.
For next years riding, I plan on upgrading the internals of engine. Will cost some $$$, but the power will be worth it. I want it to scare me when I full open throttle =) The louder the better too, my new neighbor is an a-hole. They cussed out my wife and told her to learn to drive because their dog ran onto my property while she was coming home and it ran in front of the truck. She locked the tires up trying to stop...just slid. Our response was "keep the f***ing dog off our property then". She lets her dog come over and use my yard as bathroom and doesn't clean it up. Now when I see ehr dog on my property I let my dog out to chase ti away. They have one of those ankle biters, I have a big german shepard. Maybe I need to teach him to use their property as a bathroom...he makes BIG landmines. Wish that was my only problem with them, I have a feeling they are going to be a pain to live next to this summer.
Anyone near michigan? Do you plan on hitting Silver Lake sand dunes this year? I opted out last summer going to Silver Lake, just got quad, was still recovering from accident and was too unfamiliar with quad. Now all I can think of is all the races, the jumps and wide open area to ride (no trees =). Need to make friends with other neighbors, guy across street has over 80 acres of riding area, the guy 2 doors down has about 15 acres with a couple tracks wore in. I'm only on 3 acres for right now, not much room to ride. I usually take it down the street to some bank owned property that has trails and jumps.
Well I'm outta here for now, time to daydream again about warm weather. _________________ God doesn't exist but I do |

Myself and my mates have quads and motorbikes, but we are from the UK.
You dont ride your quad in the winter? We always do, check my videos for some of our mud fun, link below...
We have our own track that we built using a few tractors and machines alike. One of our fields (that the track is now situated on) could not be used for anything, the river flows around the one side and a largeish stream the other making it a island, we get onto the track via a bridge. That was our basic track area we have now expanded onto another field that we access by either going over a jump across the stream or driving through the stream.
Our track consits of about 10 jumps, table tops to brook jumps, and it has taken a while to perfect all of these using the mini digger.
Here are some screenshots from http://www.maps.live.com
I have drawn on where the our track goes and where each jump is:

If you look through this part of my photobucket, you can see lots of pics and as you get to like page 2 or 3, there are some pics of the jumps and this will give you an idea of what our jumps are like. The photos of the jumps were taken when the track was flooded, thats what happens when the river runs around it hahaha.

Nice track you have going there, wish I had something like that around here. I prefer MX to trail riding.
Checked out all the links you gave, you have some nice clips in there...my fav is the guy wiping out twice in a row. I'd be kicking myself in my azz if that was me.
If your interested in building that 660, take a look at this site http://www.raptorforum.com/ it will have all the info you could possibly ever need to mod it. But beware visiting that site, it will motivate you to buy buy and buy more upgrades!!
Couple days ago I decided I was going to get a hotcams stage II cam and also add in a 11:1 piston along with a Trinity Air filter system. Once more money comes my way I also plan on getting a nice port n polish done. That will bump me up to around 60hp...a 33% increase over stock hp. Insane!!! I could get a bigger cam and piston but would require me to run racing gas, I want to keep it pump gas.
This sudden want to get it going faster came from a challenge from one of my buddies that just resurrected his highly modded Banshee...I don't like to lose or even have a close race. I prefer to dominate. He says he going to eat me alive...
The real test will be when we get to the dunes this year, some nice bikes show up and ready to race. I know I will get toasted by a few there. But that will motivate me to build it even more for next season.
As for not riding during the winter..
I don't really have the gear to not freeze my butt off and I end up getting very cold very fast. Plus with all the snow we got this year, its more of just trying not to get stuck rather than having fun and playing around. I pull my kids on a sled a few times during winter...I really hate the cold.
Took the rappy out this past weekend, didnt venture far from house. I took it up and down my street a few times at around 90mph trying to see if anyone was going to call the cops on me...no one did. Rest of the time I stayed on my property...which half of it is flooded at the moment. By the end of fun time, I was covered in mud from head to toe. Poor quad went from a nice blue to lumpy brown. _________________ God doesn't exist but I do |

i'll take a look at that site thanks, does it ship to the UK though?
We used to have a banshee, but it was a bit crappy so we sold it, the gears were a bit jerky and the throttle stuck on once and it plowed into a tree, scared the crap out of the rider hahah
Whats the 700 raptor like? The 660's really nice _________________ [img:0692e75ce3]http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/7623/flamingacesiguy7.jpg[/img:0692e75ce3]

The site itself doesn't sell things, the people on it do though. The users of site can direct you in right direction of where to find the best price on mods. The site has about 6-7 sponsors. Each sponsor is a company that specializes in raptors. A lot of us use them to buy stuff from and have work done like porting. A real cool bunch of knowledgeable people.
The 700 is the best quad out there in my opinion. It starts right away every time, with that fuel injection...even after it sits for a whole season. Its low maintenance, lot of torque, reverse and easy to upgrade.
One prob with 700 is that it doesn't do the best in competitive MX. Its a little bit heavy and big for that, but there are a lot of people that still use it for MX and win.
The rappy stock is impressive machine, add in the BIG 3 mods and it roars. 3 mods being FI controller, intake and exhaust. That alone will put you in the 40 range of HP. Add in a cam and piston, your in the 50's. Then add in port n polish, +2mm throttle your now pushing 60hp.
After that the next step is boring it out and crank. There are some people that top 100hp, which I have NO idea how they are able to hang on without flying off the back. Banshees used to be King of the dunes, not anymore...a rappy with basically same mods will eat em.
Like I said, I love the machine, the mods are not expensive and easy to do. The 1st mod you have to get is a FI controller, I recommend the Power Commander III. It is $260 from fuelmoto.com. Reason for it being first mod, the rappy runs lean from factory, if you do anything like take airbox lid off, you leaned it out even more. The PCIII took me about 20 mins to install, plugs inline with the wiring.
I am buying my intake very very soon, I found one for $85 shipped. Its a Trinty intake with K&N filter and outerwear. The exhaust I want is expensive, $700, Barker Duals. The HotCams Stage II cam is about $170, same with the 11:1 piston. Port work is a tad under $200 and everthing mentioned works with stock internals and runs off of pump gas. Just a little idea as to what it costs to mod the rappy once you want more power. Forgot to mention the 15tooth front gear, was under $10.
What I hear about 600 vs 700 is a BIG difference. The 700 took all the good things about a 660 and then added in a ton more of goodies. _________________ God doesn't exist but I do |
