Paid or Free or Owned Hosting

Just to seek comments here. Most people says free hosting is good if you have a small site, but there are limited features. To get around the limitations, setting up your own server is one option to consider, unless you have uncle scrooge running your ISP. All is needed is to grab all those old spare computer parts, get rid of the cob webs and run your own server. The downside to this is that you must ensure that you have a public ip and that you have a static ip, other wise it just creates a pain setting things up. The nice thing about it... well you can have as much freedom with stuff like php configuration etc, mysql configs etc. If it's your first try... DON"T PUT PRIVATE MATERIAL OR IMPORTANT stuff on the site. If you are not very familiar with linux intrusion prevention and configuration... chances are that you WILL get hacked or used for spam but that just teaches you how to better protect your server in the future.

No, really. Last I checked, no servers are to be run on my home internet connection. Not sure they'd care unless you started pushing a lot of bandwidth though.

I don't run a server locally, but I recently got a new ADSL modem/router which has a Dynamic DNS feature.
This means that if you are registered at a site such as dyndns.org (they point a web address to your IP), it automatically updates your external IP. So it is not necessary to request a static IP and it is not difficult to keep the dynamic one up-to-date.

I prefer paid or free hosting (also, paid my own hosting just posting is a good way, hehehe).

It also depends, because sometimes the free hosting service is really bad (fortunely, Lifeless People is not the case). In that situation, the paid hosting is the best option, but just with a good service provider.

Pardo88, you are far too optimistic. While I and other long time members can vouch for this hosting provider, the past few months have been a significant blip, at least by L2P's standards.

I actually used free hosts for quite some time. However, for about a year now, all my really important sites are all hosted at a paid webhost.

I also hosted a few things on my own server, an old 350mghz win98 laptop which was hosted at a friend's house. However, it was actually more down than up. Silly

You shouldn't have put Win98 on it in the first place. It's network features suck and it's definitely much more vulnerable than any later version of Windows (except ME, I suppose). You should have put a lightweight Linux distro on it, instead.

Naw but I can see why you might use it... If the hard drive space is really small and you can't dual boot it but you don't wanna lose Windows...

We'll go with that excuse.

Most of my hosting is paid. I wouldn't go for running my own hosting at home as I'm not really smart enough for that. And it's a wee bit too risky, with all the numbwits and hackers and such. It's easier to let someone else take the risks!

I don't think running a server from home is a very good option, unless you have a good computer and decent connection and really know your stuff. A friend once shown me a site of a guy he knows who hosted it on his PC. It was terribly slow. Most likely can't handle more than several people online at once. I bet it would work even worse if accessed from another country. Just don't do it.

I never used paid hosting, though I would probably get it if my site exceeded what I'm offered here. Which it does not. Not even close.
