Interestingly, while working on another mess of a code left for me by some incompetent "developer", I came across this issue. It seems some set ups of PHP require an absolute path for local resources, e.g. /usr/home/[user]/public_html/image.jpg Otherwise, you just get zero or null data, which seems to be the case here.
