After 5 years of development, the gold version of phpBB3 is finally released, after going to 5 betas and 8 release candidates.

I created this topic here as a discussion for both the script itself and about it being on LifelessPeople.

I joined in the party yesterday for the countdown. The phpBB.com forum was packed with 5000+ users.

I actually see quite a number of features, compared to competing Invision Power Board (IP. Board or IPB), vBulletin (vB) and Simple Machines Forum (SMF). You can view both this comparison and phpBB 2 and 3 comparison at phpBB.com.

No, I did not edit my posts.

Really, I didn't.

Olympus is just the codename.

Almost anything have their own codename.

I have never installed a phpBB or even tested it on my site. But I must say the LLP forum is quite nice.

Can any body tell me what version the LLP forum is running?

phpBB3 is a hell to modify unless you have a few weeks time to figure out where everything is and how it's integrated with the other parts.

phpBB2 is also the same.

If you don't study and play around with it, there's no way you can familiarise with the code. I didn't know what the code inside phpBB2 does when I started learning PHP as well.

LLP uses phpBB2.

I would think that would be the same with trying to modify the source code of pretty much anything.

phpBB3 is very new and was just released. We will definitely be looking at the software and the possibility of upgrading just to sort out all the old problems the L2P forum has, but it will take a few months.

Definitely!

Converting to phpBB3 is safe. It does not affect the phpBB2 database, which means you might want to install it somewhere on lifelesspeople.com and use the convert option to test it out.

And when it's time to upgrade, you might as well update the site, perhaps by grabbing news from the news forum and place it on LifelessPeople main page.

Oh yea, we need to work out the style too. This grey style is a definite must for LifelessPeople. It will be tough converting the style because phpBB3 uses a new way to manage styles.

I'll probably be upgrading my phpBB2 forums to phpBB3 (all 4 of them) but not for a little while yet. It may have been available to public to test/use etc. but i dont trust it just yet

phpBB3 does look very good though

I like the way proSilver looks, but I don't really like its font.

subSilver2 looks better in my opinion. Maybe I am used to subSilver in phpBB2.

I figured out a lot more of phpBB2 than I did about phpBB3 in the same time span.

You should know that they totally rewritten phpBB3 from ground and added a lot of features that people complained not included in phpBB2.

phpBB3's code will definitely be more complex. Go compare the two versions and you should see that the security level has increased.

And it's just a matter of how much you get used to each version.

Supposing you did not modify phpBB2 first, rather phpBB3 first, you might be more used to its code since you won't expect phpBB2-like code in phpBB3.

They certainly took their time before releasing it Smile . Of course you can only be happy about that, it's better to wait until most of the major bugs are out of your code instead of releasing an unfinished product (a lesson the game industry should learn Wink ).

In my opinion it will take a long time before llp will be updated to use PHPBB3, the forum is running a lot of mods and I guess it would just give too many problems to upgrade right now. But, I'm sure that Trel won't continue to use PHPBB2 forever and there will be a day that we all will read an announcement saying that the llp forum is upgrading to PHPBB3.

I can't wait until that day Very Happy
