I am finding the games I am always most interested in are always sold out, no matter where I look. The people will just tell me I should have pre-ordered it... I am not really sure how pre-ordering works though, do you pay for the game when you pre-order it or do you pay for the game when it comes in and some extra for them holding on to it for you?

I pre-ordered Guild Wars: Eye of the North just because you get a free pre-release pack if you do. It's the first game ever that I pre-ordered and it didn't cost anything extra. I did have to pay 5€ in advance so that they are sure that you come pick the game up when it has arrived  .

Do stores in your area, not get many copies of games or what? Go to the store on the release date, for a better chance to get it.
Usually when you put money down for a pre-order: it counts towards the purchase. So if you give them $5 for a $50 game, you should only have to pay $45 (plus tax) when you actually buy the game. Any store that doesn't put the money towards the game, should be avoided. Sometimes you get something for pre-ordering: but it's usually junk.
When in doubt: order games online.

Pre-ordering is buying the game in advance. The store usually does not require anything more than a set amount that you need to put down in order to pre-order.
For instance, GameStop offers pre-orders for Halo 3 for a minimum of $5, $30 for the Legendary Edition due its higher cost. So you pay $5 for a copy of the game. You now have $55 left to pay. Anytime between the time you pre-order and the time the game comes out you can pay more or completely pay off your pre-order so that when the release date comes, all you need is your receipt and the game is yours.
Pre-orders are offered so that the company/store, such as GameStop, can earn interest off of all the pre-order money while they sit on it until the game actually comes out at which time they pay up. You are guaranteed to receive a copy of the game you pre-ordered and the store earns an extra bit of profit.
Pre-order = Must Do to Get Gaming Day One!

I pre-ordered a few games in the past, never had to pay extra. But usually going to the store on release day is fine too. You just have to be early, like with san andreas, I got the last copy in the shop. Same for supreme commander

For me, when you pre-order a game from a store like EB Games, they usually make you put down a deposit like 20 bucks and then you can pay the rest (but no more than the retail price) when you come to pick up the game when it is released. I don't mind doing this because at least that way it guarantees me a copy. That's what I did with my Xbox 360 anyway.
However for some places you just make the order, and they won't charge anything until they ship it to you. Like I ordered Halo 3 online, but they won't charge anything to my card until it ships. No deposit. In the end, there's no harm in it except for maybe if there are problems with shipping or something unusual.

I can understand pre-ordering a system, but pre-ordering games is still a bit unneccessary in my view. Even popular games rarely sell out.
The pre-ordering at EB or Gamestop is the only way to get some new games at those stores. I've heard many reports of people going in the stores trying to get the game, and the employees say "sorry you can't buy it, we only saved it for people that pre-ordered". I'm not sure if that's the case with all EB and Gamestop stores, but it's a stupid rule. Obviously it saves them money in the long run (with some games at least), but it ticks many people off. I frankly don't buy new games from those stores anyway, as they open many games and sell them as new when they aren't. A disc being taken out of a cabinet and inserted in the game case, is clearly not new.

In the past I have preordered games of various websites. All I do is pay for it as per normal. When it's released they debit my account on completion of my order.
No money is taken the date I preordered it, only the date the game is dispatched to me. |

While I understand your viewpoint, I don't think you know why they take the disks out of the box and store it behind the desk. It's for the same reason why Blockbuster seemingly started the trend. It's to discourage theft.
Video games are popular, obviously, with teens. Unfortunately teens are also more likely to take a chance and steal what they can't afford. So, they take the disk out of the box and store it with them where it is safer (someone has to essentially rob the clerk to get them) than it is out on the shelf near the entrance.
Regardless, you probably know all this already. I just don't think it's a valid excuse to not want to buy a new game from these stores just because they have measures in place to deter theft.

No, it's definitely a valid excuse, as the employees there get to rent the games for free, and usually those already open ones have been played by the employees and then returned to be resold. If they can't give you one in the shrink wrap, you shouldn't be paying full price for a NEW game, as it's not NEW anymore. They should only have one opened copy so just ask for a shrinkwrapped copy if they try to give you the opened one.
At least this is true at EBgames and GameStop.
I don't understand how you couldn't be able to find the video games you wanted though, unless you were looking for some obscure games. Walmarts and Targets and Best Buys pretty much always have any game I could want. Of course, if you are having trouble finding one, preordering is always a great idea. It doesn't cost any extra, really. Plus, they don't open preordered copies so you're guaranteed to get one fresh in its shrink-wrapping and all. |

I don't know what Ebgames you guys are going to but when I buy a new game I have about 2 layers of plastic to go through to get to the actual case and then additionally these 2 stickers on the side of the case and the top (so you can't open it without getting those off as well).
Also, I ended up pre-ordering Halo 3 (which I'll be picking up tomorrow) and Guitar Hero 3. It cost me $5 each when I pre-ordered but when I go to pick up the game when it comes out, that $5 will be subtracted from the cost of the game.
