Is it possible that there is something installed whereby the individual posters first language can be displayed?

I know a lot of people use this place to improve their English, and for the most part, they are credits to themselves.

However, without trying to name and shame, I spotted a post earlier which would need something along these lines. Firstly, any English speaker would be happy to help correct the basic posting errors, but secondly, it is infinitely possible it could have been from one of those who simply can not be bothered to take the time to post proper English, and use internet shorthand that quite a number of us have no idea how to translate!

Is there such a thing available, and could it be added here? Moreover, is it viable to add it here?

I'm not sure in what way such a module would help. It still won't improve the bad post, would it? But it might invite unwanted 'help' that'll simply irritate the poster.

Besides, there are lots of people here who don't have English as their native tongue. Quite a large percent of overall members, I'd say.

And last, there's a very handy tool that is already installed, the SpellCheck. New members should be encouraged to use it, and that'll reduce the unreadability of some posts (and posters) a lot.

I am not saying that it would improve a bad post, nothing could do that! What I am saying, is that if people are here to improve their grasp of the complexities of The English Language, then any help given would hardly be unwanted....

The post I refer to was almost straight out of an online translator, so it did not make real sense, although the spelling was perfect. However, there are times when such posts could be touted as spam, or internet shorthand, and be treated badly in that way.

Still, it was only a question, and I would be interested to see the answers from non-English speakers also.

Heh, the kind of situation you've described is tough, 'cause the person probably just wants to learn, but if their level of English requires a full sentence translator, then it's not a good idea allowing them to stay here. Nothing but disruption will come out of it. Too much miscommunication.

English isn't my first language either (it's my third language, actually), so here you have one non-English speaker's opinion.

I think it's a good idea and I would like to be corrected in public when I write in English. It's an offense if you correct me in public in Spanish Laughing

You can add a note to your signature if you wish to be corrected on your English.

The primary language does not say much about someone's language skill. My native language is Dutch, but writing in English is no problem for me. I may even be better at writing English than someone who has English as his or her native language. For instance because I may spend more time thinking about words and sentence construction.

I thought that is a great idea, many of us here do not really write English that well.

That is true.
Even native speaker is not well in their language: I meet many Singaporean who has very good English but very poor in Chinese (Chinese their native language)
Even they only need to use single language, but they are not so well on them - not everybody are good in language, isn't it?
(And this is very common in the science and engineering guys: they are good at math and programming, but poor at human language!)

So, this may not be necessary to display poster native language - if you want to have better English, read some grammar book.

I think it would be a good idea. It would help people who dont know english very well, because if they dont understand something, someone else who speaks their language could PM the meaning of a word/paragraph/phrase

Yes, I don't speak English really much in real life, but I type better in English.

You mean Chinese Singaporeans. Wink
