I found this interesting illustration that explains to you how the earth is round.

This will finally put to rest any speculations and doubts that you may have.

I put this in the Local bistro because its a learning topic, and very intellectual.

there is a simple way to know/prove the Earth is round. Ships come UP on the horizon as they get closer. This proves simply that the Earth is a sphere.

Yes I did, but the picture does not declare this even if it illustrates it.

I must admit that the only proof I ever had was the pictures they took from space Very Happy I never really thought about it this way and in my honest opinion, the picture illustrates it perfectly Smile .

And just like that without expecting it, I've learned something today Smile .

Or, you know, you could just go to a flat area and check out how the horizon is curved.

For that to work you'd have to have height and the higher the better. You can actually see the curve of the earth when you're flying in an airplane. The best place for this is obviously in areas that are very flat or over the ocean. Commercial jets fly anywhere from 20,000 to 40,000 feet above the ground, sometimes higher so you can see the curvature quite well.

You don't need to go that high though. Several hundred feet is all that it takes but the surrounding area should be flat or you'd miss the effect.

I've seen it on airplanes myself as well as at the top of the CN-Tower in Toronto when looking out over Lake Ontario.

Another way of proving the earth is round is by looking at the moon.

The fact a part of the moon dissapears is because the earth casts a round shadow on the moon.

Not really... that is more of a characteristic of a round earth, and could also apply to a flat earth where the moon simply hides underneath the earth. That was probably a poor explanation so just virtualise a ball spinning around a piece of paper.

I also always wondered why when looking at a Round Moon and round sun that it was also most likely a round Earth.

The Earth can be round, but still flat. Think of a disc. The Wikipedia article on The Flat Earth Society has an image of what I'm talking about. It's flat, but circular, which is why you can travel all the way around and end up in the same spot, they believe latitude is circular (well, I guess it technically is, but hopefully you can catch my drift).
