For the longest time, I thought that video games came out on their release date. Turns out I was wrong. I had never actually bought a video game on it's release date, anyway. Just an example:
Super Mario Galaxy came out two days ago (in the only part of the world that really matters, aside from Japan 'cuz they make my games)... right? Wrong. My friend wanted to buy the game on the release date, so we went to Target to pick it up. Turns out, Target wasn't going to release the game until two days later. So, naturally we took out business elsewhere; Best Buy. Big mistake. Best Buy was not going to release the game until the next day.
So, how do you guys feel about release dates? Is it even worth it to get a game on the day it is released? _________________

I don't care about release dates much, as I don't buy many games right away when they are released. Usually games are released on Tuesdays (for North America at least), so I wait until Wednesday to be sure. Sometimes stores get the game in a day late though, and sometimes they do have it early. Even though they technically shouldn't be selling it before the release date. Companies don't check often, so they get away with selling things early.

That's not likely to happen much currently. In a few weeks, you can find it a little cheaper (by $5 or so) at only used video game stores. Even with a game that does horrible, it's a while before it drops by a big amount. _________________ http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Main_Page

I dont usually get games on the day they come out. They do have a habit of going down quite a bit after about a month here, even the good games. but then again, most of the games i get i get from online so their like only £20 when i get them _________________ Midnight Tempest - A Sailor Moon TCG

I buy games at EB Games and every game I get comes out on the official release date. (Halo 3, Guitar Hero 3, BioShock) _________________ Tutorial Management Script - Version 1.3 Released

The release date means the day the game is released by the producer or developer. To meet everyone's needs they need stock, which means it takes a few days before the stuff reaches the shop from the factory. _________________ Jacky |

Actually, I'm 99% sure that the factories/manufacturers ship it to the retailers before the release date (this is why you get leaks or early sales) and the retailers are told the day they are to put it on sale, which is the official release date. _________________ Tutorial Management Script - Version 1.3 Released

I don't know why some stores have strange release dates. I generally never buy games right when they come out. I tend to wait a couple months or longer, unless it's a game I really, really want. But even then, it has to be a great game for me to pay $50. The only time I bought a game right when it came out was with the Orange Box, and I downloaded that from Steam less than 10 minutes after it was released. That's a bit different than a boxed, retail version of a game, though. _________________ "Dissent is the highest form of patriotism." --Thomas Jefferson

That's true to a point. It's usually Monday as the "shipping" date, with Tuesday being the actual release date (which applies to movies and CDs) as well. There is some exceptions, but generally if you check a store late in the week, the game should be there.
The people on gamefaqs (a video game forum/guide site), people are always whining about release dates. They never seem to understand shipping and release dates. There is always topics where people say they went to the store and the game wasn't there. The employees at the store tell them the correct date, but the people just think they are lying or whatever. If people understand shipping and release dates more, this wouldn't be such an issue. _________________ http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Main_Page

The release date is the date they are allowed to start selling. Though lately a lot of the release dates are not being met do to shipping dates not being met. Mostly these are due to companies having to fix last minute bugs. This has been great for me a lot of times when I don't really want the game but know it will be out late. Because Circuit City has this guaranteed in stock on the release date or you get a $20.00 gift card free. I have about $120.00 still left to use. |
