|
|
I'm having difficulties resizing Vista's partition so that I can dual boot with Ubuntu. I've tried using the disk manager GUI tool, but I get an error saying there is not enough space to shrink the partition (there's about 40 GB free). I've also tried using diskpart.exe, but it gives me an error saying the partition is inconsistent and I need to scan the volume with CHKDSK (it continues to give the same error even after running CHKDSK).
Does anyone know of any other ways to resize a partition without having to format the drive and just making a smaller partition? _________________

I'd stay away from Windows tools.
I'd use GPartEd (Gnome Partition Editor). Even though it involves downloading and burning a CD image, I find it much better and safer.
Get it from:
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/download.php
You can either get the Live CD and burn it to a CD with something like Nero or get the Live USB version and put it on your usb stick, phone or whatever (provided you can work out how to get the computer to boot from a USB device). I think the live CD is the best option.

EDIT: Yay, I'm posting from Ubuntu! |
not that it matters now but if ubuntu is installed you can add gparted in add/remove software and use it from there or just use it from the ubuntu install disc |

| mcwkm, thanks for pointing that out. I have given the GPartEd advice for many in this situation and never thought of getting them to use the CD or DVD they have prepared anyway for the partitioning. Only applies if the install disc comes with a live CD although most seem to these days, especially the common ones. |

I know basically all the ubuntu discs have it or have another partition manager. I remember it being in the add/remove software too. So it saves a cd which is always nice |
