There was some interest in participating in SpeedHack, so I figured I'd post this too to let people know about it. RetroHack is similar to SpeedHack, in that it's a game programming competition that uses Allegro, but you get a month to make the game rather than three days. The game has to be retro-styled though, so like NES (or possibly something from an even older system).

I'm not entirely sure of the all rules; I've never participated in RetroHack before. I think the last time it was held was like five years ago (someone even had to write a brand new library to use with this RetroHack). It starts, I think, next friday, but I could be wrong. It really all depends on when the library gets finished.

Some useful information:

I enter with pong on an oscilloscope, but I doubt that entry would be accepted Silly I might join in for real though, depends on how much work I'll have at the end of the month.

RetroHack started two days ago. Go and download the library if you're interested. Although it based off of Allegro, you don't really need to know Allegro at all since RetroHack comes with it's own retro and limited library.

So far I think it's pretty cool. The RetroHack machine can't really do all that much, so it kinda feel like I have to program everything from graphics routines to the sound routines myself (and in a way this is true).

The RetroHack machine is roughly equivalent to the Lynx in terms of capabilities. So, if you've ever wanted to program for the Lynx for some reason, now's your chance (sort of).

I assume I'm too late to still enter the contest.

Yes. RetroHack ended several weeks back. I didn't finish my entry, neither did most people. There were only like two complete entries. I blame it on the competition being too long to stay focused.

Here's the thread made as RetroHack was ending. All of the finished entries should be in there, but you may have to compile them if you want to try them out.

Compiling them is the least of my worries. Though I'm not really fond of the allegro system. Too much things to keep in mind. Simply using SDL is a lot easier in my opinion. And SDL at least works with Visual Studio 2005 Express Edition without you having to install the entire DirectX SDK.

I probably won't be of much help posting info about game programming competitions, then. I don't forsee me participating in any non-Allegro game competition anywhere in the near future.

You should still try it out though: http://www.libsdl.org/

I don't know... I already know how to use Allegro. Is learning something really that beneficial? I don't know if I can bear going through the trouble of learning a brand a new library when I finally feel as though I could create anything imaginable with what I already know.

But, I suppose I may give it a try someday; perhaps if my artistic skills ever improve enough to warrant using real graphics instead of my pultry scribbles in MS Paint.
