Apple has finally released the final build of Safari 3.1 for windows! and I must say it works really smooth. I love how it works actually and is much faster than Firefox.

I also just love how it looks. No wonder people use Mac Silly but i'll still stick with my windows.

I havent had any problems with it. It installs and loads up just fine. Renders pages and fine, and it also doesn't render bold fonts too bloated for me any more as it did in the past.

Anyways I just downloaded it and I need more time to use it to give an honest opinion. Also I can't make it my default browser until roboform works with it Silly but i love how alot of companies are working on their browsers again to make them the best. Browser wars all over again Silly

Experience the web, Apple style, with Safari: the fastest, easiest-to-use web browser in the world.
With its simple, elegant interface, Safari gets out of your way and lets you enjoy the web, up to 2 times faster than Internet Explorer.
The fastest web browser on any platform, Safari loads pages up to 2 times faster than Internet Explorer 7 and up to 1.6 times faster than Firefox 2. And it executes JavaScript up to 2.8 times faster than Internet Explorer 7 and up to 1.6 times faster than Firefox 2.
What does all that mean for you? Less time loading pages and more time enjoying them.

Wow you guys! i am actually really loving this.

You know how in older versions of safari for mac and also the beta's for pc... I am loving this!

The default theme or the only one you can use or whatever is actually pretty nice too. It even colors these little input boxes so i can actually see them better, and plus it'll let you expand them!
screen shot i just took of that:

Wow I didn't expect this browser to be any good because the beta's sucked so much. It runs so much smoother than Firefox or Ie and much faster, and a good: It's not eating up all my RAM! WOOT.

I'm sticking with this browser now. It seems more promising to me than IE7-8 or firefox 3. I'm loving it, and usually I hate anything from Apple.

Oh yeah, there is also this developers menu. I just found it by looking in the settings it there was a check box for "show develop menu" or something like that. And then when i checked it it then showed the title for the menu up at the top between bookmarks and windows and click it and the menu drops down. Its pretty cool.

But it has an option for "user agents" and it shows alot of them i can select from like ie 6 and firefox 1 and so on. Here is a screenshot of that
http://www.damnidunno.com/temp/useragent.jpg

Does that mean i can select one of those and it'll render as that? Or what?

Anyways this is pretty cool and you should all at least try it out. Forget how sucky the beta's were. this is nice.

BTW > Firefox just deleted erased all my logins again, which is enough to push me to another browser. tired of that Neutral

Is apple getting more aggressive in trying to push safari to windows users?

When I logged onto my computer like 10 minutes ago, Apple Update (from iTunes) popped up and told me that Safari 3.1 was available as a download update. Knowing that if I chose to ignore and close the update window, it would pop up 10 minutes later with the same message, I figured what the hell and installed it.

I haven't played around with it yet, but as a small time web dev I suppose I should have it at least for testing purposes. But I thought it unusual that it would show up in Apple Updater and more or less mandate its installation (or suffer annoying popup windows for the rest of your life).

I have a Mac so I probably wouldn't install Safari on my Windows PC just because I don't even use it on my Mac, haha.

I'll definitely give the newest Safari a try when I get around to installing it but for now I have 3.0 and I'm not a huge fan.

I do enjoy how fast it is and everything, but for some reason I just enjoy using Firefox more (even though photos look better on Safari due to colour profile management).

On the note of user agents, I don't believe that they change how the page renders but they let you change what browser the website you're visiting thinks you are using. So if you get to a page that says "no access for people not using IE" then you can change your user agent to trick it into thinking you are using IE even though you aren't.

I just use it for testing purposes (since I develop websites)

I actually have the feeling it's slower than firefox (installed both on windows XP SP2). Starting Safari is definately faster than starting firefox, but loading web pages seem to take ages compared with firefox. (Well, not ages, but at least 1 to 2 seconds longer, and it DOES feel like ages Silly)

Is there any way you've tweaked it to make page loads faster? (I checked, and their site has this test results comparing page load times to other browsers, and according to their results, it's the fastest. How on earth than can it be it's so slow here? Silly)

Other than that safari does look really nice, and I'm surprised that it renders most websites just like it shoulds. Just to bad the Safari window really looks out of place on windows XP. Wink Maybe Microsoft should adapt XP so it looks more like Safari Silly

I guess I wouldn't mind using it as default browser if it loaded pages faster.

Okay i'm going to have to go back on my word. I can't use safari right now.

Why? The bold font is still too bold! almost hard to read sometimes, and there is no way that it needs to look so damn bulky. Why do they do this? I doubt that I am the only one who can't stand this.

I'll post a screenshot soon of what I'm talking about. There has to be a fix for this. Seriously makes all the bold writing on all the pages not fit in with the site.

Scar, I know what you are referring to, I had the same issue in Safari 3 beta and find it amazing that it still has not been resolved. I remember someone posting a fix and it having to do with environmental variables that should have been changed to suit Windows rather than Mac.

So it can be fixed and should not be a show stopper if you are interested in using it. Not that I see the point though. You can get Safari like themes for other browsers if it's the look you are after, and Firefox lite variants if you want something light, but still extensible.

I've always liked Safari due to its fast loading times and its compatibility with 1Password on OS X, but it still isn't keeping up with web standards. I mean sure, FireFox isn't either, but at least it still works with most sites.

However, WebKit is at and above most browsers when it comes to web standards.
WebKit is what Safari is based off of, in fact Safari is just a consumer-based Apple front end to WebKit. Apple just makes sure it is stable so that their support lines aren't jammed with bug reports Silly
Many things that are broken with Safari on Windows are fixed in WebKit and most bugs that are reported get fixed within the month if not the week.

You can find WebKit's bleeding edge nightly builds here:

Loading times? Considering the amount of time you use a browser for at a time, does a second or two extra matter? Or were you referring to faster loading of web pages and so forth?

If so, you may be interested to know that FF3 is expected to be faster than Safari despite its extended feature set, here is one benchmark (I know it has its limitations and perhaps even some bias):

That extra bolding is a known issue that Windows folks are freaking out about. Instead of using Microsoft's ClearType, Apple instead opted to use OS X's font softening algorithm. Needless to say, it doesn't work the same way when ported to Windows.

I'm pretty sure they will heed the complaints they have been getting and will change how they soften fonts in Safari. They are trying too hard to push into Windows territory to just ignore the complaints.

I tried a beta version of Safari for Windows and I didn't like it. To begin with, I don't like the Mac style. Then, there was lack of features and some bugs. I think that there is no replacement for Firefox.
