The Shawshank Redemption is without a doubt one of the most brilliant movies I have ever seen. Similar to The Green Mile in many respects (and better than it in almost all of them), these two movies have shown us that Stephen King is a master not only of horror but also of prose that shakes the soul and moves the heart. The plot is average, but King did great things with it in his novella that are only furthered by the direction, and the acting is so top-rate it's almost scary.

Tim Robbins plays Andy Dufrane, wrongly imprisoned for 20 years for the murder of his wife. The story focuses on Andy's relationship with "Red" Redding (Morgan Freeman, in probably his best role) and his attempts to escape from Shawshank. Bob Gunton is positively evil and frightening as Warden Norton, and there are great performances and cameos all around; the most prominent one being Gil Bellows (late as Billy of Ally McBeal) as Tommy, a fellow inmate of Andy's who suffers under the iron will of Norton.

If you haven't seen this movie, GO AND RENT IT NOW. You will not be disappointed. It is positively the best movie of the '90's, and one of my Top 3 of all time. This movie is a spectacle to move the mind, soul, and heart

I recently asked my mom what her favorite movie was ever - turns out it's Casablanca.

Fair enough.

She asked mine - I told her Shawshank Redemption.

SHE'D NEVER HEARD OF IT.

-------------

Shawshank isn't a melodrama like Godfather. It's not an epic like Star Wars, and it barely made a dent in the box office.

It didn't win an oscar, it doesn't have Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt in it, and it's a movie about prison.

Sexy, right?

What Shawshank is, quite simply, is the greatest movie you've never seen.

For all those who say it's overrated, that it's not a "classic", tell me - is the opening scene of the prison, panning above the ground, with the violin symphony not divine? Is it not awe-inspiring? Does your heart not ache a little? Do your eyes not widen, knowing you're about to experience something much bigger than yourself?

It is one of the most sobering and yet beatiful shots in cinema history.
To deny the movie this merit is to admit you do not appreciate art.
How important can a movie be if it does not inspire us? If it doesn't motivate us? If it doesn't challenge us?

What Shawshank lacks in star power or visual effects, it makes up in substance. Make no mistake about it, Shawshank's acting is perfect, and it's storyline flawless, but more than anything, if you let it, it will take a hold on your heart.

Some movies make you laugh. Others make you cry. And Shawshank has those moments scattered within it. But the greatest movies are the ones that have integrity. That do more than just play with our emotions. That leave a lasting impression, beyond the cries and smiles.

WHAT IS SHAWSHANK?

It is hope.

Like Andy said, there is something deep down that they cannot touch.

Fortunately for us, the Shawshank Redemption DOES touch us somewhere deep down inside...

And that alone makes it nothing short of "magnanomous".

dude, get the book, 4 Seasons (it has Apt Pupil and Stand By Me in it as well, plus another).

The best part is, parts of other stories hint at who the real killer of Andy's wife and her lover, which is very cool, and subtle writing.

I saw this movie like one year ago.

I liked it yes, because a movie with Morgan Freeman can´t be bad, but I don´t know... didnt completly fill me inside.

It was a nice and a moving history, good characters, a plot without plotholes but it wasn´t very amazing...

I liked other escape movies like "The Great Escape" but this one has also a sweet background and, as I said, a moving history.

I would give it 7/10...

I thought it was a good movie because I was impressed with it for a lot of reasons, but one was that I had read the story before I had actually seen the movie and I was really surprised at how close they truly were. Even the ending of the book had the same lines to it and I thought it was a very well done film.

I always enjoy a Morgan Freeman movie because he adds so much to each and every role that he takes. I thought that this was yet again another great role for him. Tim Robbins did a really wonderful job in his role as well. You could feel his frustrations, his angst and his desperation however subtle it could be during periods of the film. I thought it was a very good movie and while it might not have the sensationalism that some other films have, I thought it was very nicely done. The biggest point in it that impressed me really was how much it followed the book itself. That was very surprising seeing how when things get turned into a movie, it loses a lot. This film didn't and for that it always kind of sticks out in my mind.

Yes! This is one of my all time favorite movies. I can watch this movie from the beginning or even the middle and always watch it till the end. Morgan Freeman just had such a memorable role in it and the story was just amazing! Awesome flick for sure!
