I used to read, compose and reply mails using mail clients in the past. Stuff like The Bat, Mulberry etc ... never like Outlook though because its too large in size. The reason I use mail clients in the past is most email providers do not offer sufficient space to archive mails. So I had backups of important mails on my hard disk.

With the birth of Gmail, I do not use mail clients anymore. Its pretty convenient and you can keep your mail online that is accessible anywhere in the world. So its quite meaningless to use email clients, isn't it ?

Nevertheless, I still prefer that desktop feel of an email client, I particularly like that three-paned view where you can read, compose, and send messages, as well as maintain an address book. Check out this Simple Mail (POP3/IMAP/SMTP), a Fire Fox extension. Its small in size, only 134KB and has all the basic features to get notified, read and write email messages in Firefox. You can visit the original website at http://telega.phpnet.us/simplemail/. Pretty cool, and its really worth a try.

Simple Mail is a mail notifier & client (POP3/IMAP/SMTP), you can get notified, read and write email messages inside Firefox.

Features:

* Attachments are supported
* Ability to delete individual messages from server. (Not just "delete/don't delete all" mode like is done in many other POP3 clients.)
* Convenient address book: enter "j s" in the address field to find Jonh Smith's email.
* Ability to assign icon color to an account so that messages of different accounts are shown in different colors
* Context menu "Send by Simple Mail", allowing quickly send selected text or link from a html page
* "Download headers only" mode. To download message body double click message title or choose "Download" from context menu.

Usage: Configure one or more email accounts in Preferences, set account refresh time and get notified of new mail. When new mail arrives, Simple Mail shows new messages count in status bar. You can click Simple Mail icon to open received messages in a separate browser tab. Also Simple Mail has a toolbar button, which you can put on a toolbar to more easily access SM.

Also you can:

* Assign a sound to be played on new message arrival.
* Sort messages by clicking on column headers
* Create custom folders
* Drag-n-drop folders and messages into folders
* [For advanced users] Use custom directory for Simple Mail data. This allows for example to store Simple Mail data on a flash drive.
* Switch windows' layout by clicking on an icon in the top-right corner
* Stop message sending/receiving by clicking on "Loading" icon
* When editing new message use Ctrl+click to mark block of text with the last selected color
* Right-click on toolbar to choose "icons/text/icons and text" mode
* Right or middle click on account address in statusbar "Refresh" menu copies this address to clipboard

Not supported:

* multipart/related content type isn't shown correctly: images are shown at the end of a letter, not in the middle of message text
