| So apparently after 4 years of being told we could not have speakers at work, we can. I'm psyched but I actually don't have speakers I'm willing to bring there. So I need something on the cheaper side that can output decent volume. I work outside, next to noisy children and loud machines so just being able to hear the music is what I want. Powering them won't be an issue. |

I don't really know much about speakers and the different brands there are and whatnot. I have some Altec Lansing speakers hooked up to my computer. Here are the ones I have on amazon for about $30.00. I don't know if that's the kind of price you're looking for or not though. I like them - they're certainly loud enough for me.
By the way, what kind of job do you have that allows speakers? _________________

| I work at a carnival. After not being allowed to have music on rides for years, we finally can. This is why they need to be loud. I'm willing to spend a lot more then that just needs to be $300 or less. How do those play at high volumes? |

What would these speakers be playing off of? I'm going to assume you need computer speakers? (that can also plug into mp3 players).
I'm usually a fan of Logitech speakers, but even Creative makes some pretty good stuff. Personally, I no longer go with any pair of speakers that don't have a subwoofer, but I think the use of the subwoofer would be lost in your situation...
As for specific examples, I wouldn't really know.. I have been using the same set of computer speakers for a long time. _________________ Come visit Shattered Abstracts! (Photoblog!) |

The GigaWorks T20 Series II is pretty good. Then again, nothing beats a true 5.1 or 7.1 surround system in terms of sound output. _________________ Dilly dally, shilly shally. |

Oh, I wasn't sure just how loud you needed them to be. I wouldn't recommend them then. They seem pretty loud indoors, but I don't think they would get the job done there. I also wasn't sure how much you were willing to pay (and I don't know how much speakers usually cost). Are you looking for speakers to plug into a computer or will you be using an mp3 player? _________________

I'd disagree. It depends on what you're listening to. For just music or stereo sound output, a 2.1 system typically sounds just as good, if not better for computer speakers. When you have stereo output and you're using 5.1/7.1 speakers, it spreads the 2 channels across all the satellites and I find that it dulls the sound and makes it lose its depth.
For movies and other output that actually supports surround sound, then obviously a 5.1/7.1 setup would be more ideal. _________________ Come visit Shattered Abstracts! (Photoblog!) |

The way it handles mono and stereo audio really depends on the quality of the surround system. I wouldn't try to generalize that all 5.1 and 7.1 systems suck at playing music. It's not cause your 5.1 system isn't good at it that the majority of them are. _________________ Dilly dally, shilly shally. |

Well I'd agree with you for home theater setups with a slick receiver and real nice speakers... but for computer surround sound speakers, unless you're going all out and getting those expensive Logitech ones, you'd be hard pressed to find a system that does 2 channel audio well in surround sound mode. But that's just my experience with it... _________________ Come visit Shattered Abstracts! (Photoblog!) |

well, you shouldn't just hook up your line out to your surround system (assuming that's what you're doing). Doesn't work very good that way indeed. I either use a digital signal and a small box to convert it to analogue before it reaches the amplifier. Or hook up the satellites directly to the computer and only the sub woofer the regular way. _________________ Dilly dally, shilly shally. |

Well the speakers I used had three inputs. One for the sub, one for the front speakers, and one for the back, I believe.
Regardless, it gets even harder if you're trying to plug into a laptop, as unless you're going to get a PCI-Express slot solution (overkill), you're stuck with a headphone jack. That said, the headphone jack on the Macbook doubles up as an optical line-out. _________________ Come visit Shattered Abstracts! (Photoblog!) |

Wow, a carnival. I think you'd need something specifically built for the outdoors, something that's large in size too. That's because it isn't just about being outdoors, but being in an extremely noisy environment too. I doubt any regular speakers will do. _________________ Tarakana NET |
