One thing that has always left me puzzled is why Firefox takes so long to startup. Both Opera and Internet Explorer take just seconds to get up and running, but on all four of my computers Firefox takes between 10 and 20 seconds to start (even with no extensions installed).
If you find yourself in a similar situation then what you might need is the open source Firefox Preloader.
It can be set to startup when you turn your computer on, and with it Firefox will always be at your beck and call. If there are multiple versions of Firefox installed on your computer you can decide which one you would like it to work with.
This feature does come at a cost though. When the preloader first started up on my computer it used about 4MB of memory itself, and Firefox was using about 10MB. Those aren’t drastic numbers, but for those of you conscious about the memory usage you might want to think twice before using the preloader. Also, when you close Firefox it doesn’t actually close all the way, instead it’s just tucked away so that it will still start quickly the next time you go to use it. |

try this. It sped up the startup time and over all usage of firefox for me. No extra program or extension needed:
| Quote: | 1) In the URL bar, type "about:config" (w/o quotation mark)
2) In the filter box, type "network.http.pipelining" and change the value to TRUE.
3) In the filter box, type "network.http.proxy.pipelining" and also change the value to TRUE.
4) In the filter box, type "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" and change the value to a higher # (either 20 or 30).
5) Right-click anywhere and select NEW then INTEGER. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to 0.
6) CLOSE FireFox and RESTART. |
give it a try. Worked great for me _________________ http://www.damnidunno.com | http://www.RebX.net |

Scar. That's not going to make Firefox start up much faster. Those settings are used to optimise page load times for your internet connection. _________________ Captain Jell-O Buster from the Future

If you disable firefox its updater and start up checks you can get it to start quite fast as well. Not advised though. _________________

I'm willing to bet there isn't a secret. Mine starts at about the same speed as IE, and it's pretty much instant. If it's anything, I would guess the internet connection. _________________

Appreciate your advice on how the disable firefox updater and start up checks. While its not advisable, Firefox don't give up updates daily, so if we know of an update, we can proceed to update manually. This will save lots of time during the daily start ups. Detail steps appreciated, thanks in advance

I don't know what's the reason behind it.
Supposing I don't have any tabs left behind from the previous session, Firefox will start up in a few seconds.
While for others Internet Explorer starts up very fast, for me Internet Explorer takes like 10 seconds.
I have Firefox set as my default browser. _________________ Jacky |

You guys are going to love this. Sadly, I don't have the link on me, but Firefox 3 uses a brand new memory allocator than the default one it uses right now. The new allocator is active in Release Candidate 3, if you want to see it in action.
Load times are faster, and total memory usage is lower than it used to be when you left it running.
Funny how Mozilla has denied any memory leakage by Firefox for the last two years... and they suddenly decided to "improve" it. |

Reading through this post made me decide to just wait for Firefox 3. I have been looking for ways to speed up Firefox but nothing gives any visible improvement.
And since they already released the betas for Firefox 3, my guess is that it won't be too long before Firefox 3 gets an official release. _________________ .// Proud to be Lifeless for more then 4 years \\. |

That's good news. I am used to leaving Firefox on whenever I lock my computer. And with all the clutter in my computer Firefox would lag a lot. _________________ Jacky |
